There are no words that can describe how amazing the staff is at the DoubleTree Hotel in Durango, Colorado. I booked my stay through the DoubleTree website about two months before our trip. After the reservation was booked, I called the hotel to let them know that this was a very special trip as I was planning to propose to my girlfriend along the river behind the hotel. They gave me the contact information for Jamie Stuntz, who made our trip very special. This trip was my first time visiting Durango; however, my girlfriend had previously visited this hotel on family vacations when she was younger, before it was the DoubleTree when it was the Red Lion Inn.
My girlfriend is very close with her parents; however, she does not see them as often as she would like to because they live in Des Moines, and we live in Chicago. To ensure the proposal was extra special, I invited her parents to be there with us. I also hired a photographer for the proposal. This is where Jamie went above and beyond. He worked with my photographer to identify a picturesque location behind the hotel to allow her parents to see the proposal but remain hidden. Jamie also made sure that her parent’s room was in the north wing while our room was in the south wing to minimize the chances of seeing her parents before the proposal. Their room was on the ground floor with the patio, so they could walk out from their room and celebrate with us right away.
My girlfriend and I arrived on Tuesday, 10/6/2020, and checked out on Sunday, 10/11/2020. Her parents arrived on Wednesday, 10/7/2020, the day of the proposal, and stayed one night. We arrived after Jamie had left for the evening, but I met with Jamie in the morning. He showed me where the photographer was going to be and where her parent’s room was, so I knew where to ask the question. This helped me relax as much as possible, and just a couple of hours later, I asked the important question……….SHE SAID YES!!!
Everyone we interacted with at the hotel was great, including Micki, Elizabeth, and JP. I did not want to be on my phone before the proposal, risking my fiancé overhearing any conversations. Micki spoke with my future mother in law to get an idea of the time they would arrive. Micki also gave me ideas of places to visit in town to keep my fiancé away from the hotel when her parents were scheduled to arrive. On the days following the proposal, we worked with Miki and Elizabeth most frequently. Everyone was friendly and helpful, providing recommendations of restaurants to visit during our stay.
There was one minor inconvenience during our stay when the hot water stopped working. I called down to the front desk and spoke to Micki. She let me know that the engineer was checking on the boiler and expected it to be fixed shortly. I hesitated to share this issue; however, I thought it was important to share because Micki called our room back a few minutes later and told us we should have hot water in 5 to 10 minutes. I was not expecting a callback and was pleasantly surprised. While no one wants a hot water issue staying at a hotel, this was resolved quickly, with exceptional customer service. When staying at an older hotel, it is possible to have such an issue. I would not hold this against the hotel due to their customer service and quick resolution.
We had a fantastic experience during our stay and will be back whenever we visit Durango. THANK...
Read moreWent at the end of June 2020 for 7 nights. Being the only hotel on the river (for now), staying here on you’re outdoor vacation should be a no brainer. Worth the extra dollars. I’m a Marriott Bonvoy guy and still chose this hotel instead of using points at the Marriott’s in town.) We are a family of four so we stayed in a double queen overlooking the river. The first floor offers great access to the grounds, river walk, and convenient for your four legged companions. There were absolutely no issues with homeless or people walking up and down the river walk.
Loved the décor – Great mix of Old West style and contemporary furnishings and conveniences. In the common areas there’s lots charm with old west artwork and furnishings. Although there are some older pieces, guest rooms are outfitted with more modern expectations. Although there may be some things that aren’t perfect, this hotel is in great condition for its age and location in a small western town with lots of low priced competition. The grounds were mature and well maintained. The staff here is great as well. Guest services worked with our reservation modifications and front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Although we weren’t receiving daily service, housekeeping was always amenable to our requests.
The only disappointment was that neither the restaurant or bar weren’t open even considering Covid-19 restrictions. I would have liked to sit our on the patio and enjoy a meal or drink. For example, the breakfast (included in my rate) was a very small ‘grab-n-go’ set up that didn’t always have what you needed to eat – like plates, all of which had to be awkwardly brought back to the room. I understand the reasoning, but expected more. They will be opening more as they staff back up and restrictions are better understood.
Overall we had a great stay and highly recommend for your...
Read moreWe had a wonderful experience here. We ended up at this hotel the night of Christmas Eve as we were traveling across the country for a PCS move, and we wish we could've actually stayed in the area to enjoy the views - and the hotel - longer.
My app for the hotel had some kind of glitch, so we had two different room numbers listed. Before we arrived, I used the online chat feature with the hotel to find out which room number was accurate (we were doing contactless check-in), and someone responded within a few short minutes. Great communication!
The hotel was clean, staff were kind, our room was fairly quiet, the area is safe, and the views are gorgeous.
Our favorite part: We've never been to a more dog-friendly hotel. They even had a water dish and treats waiting. Typically, my dog doesn't really eat milk bones. But for some reason, she went after these...brought the bag right to us and showed down. I think she loved it here, too! There was also a note left for us that said if our dog needed company while we were out, we could call them because they have pet boarding options. We didn't get to find out what that means, but how fantastic to know they provide that service and show love to our pets when they need it! We stayed at many hotels along the way that made it clear our dog couldn't be left there while we were out doing other things. And we made a couple stops where we did have to use Rover for a couple hours. Would've been convenient to have something like this on hand at a hotel (of it's nice, of course). Oh, and there's carpet everywhere! So if your dog is nervous on hard floors like ours, you don't have to worry about a thing.
Random note: The setup of the building is a little confusing. Make sure you go the right way from the lobby because there are kind of two sections to the building, and those sections don't meet up on...
