Very disappointed. I thought REI would complement the sport shops we have in town by bringing in some affordable alternatives to the sometimes expensive top brand gears. Boy was I wrong. I don't know about other stores in the country but this REI only carries very pricey items you should not buy (more on that below), a pitiful selection and used items that really should not be for sale.
Strolling through the camp section, the first thing I see is a $200 Coleman stove. It caught my eye because I bought almost the same one for $60 at Walmart (from Coleman too). Specs were the same, dimensions too. What's the difference? Fancy REI colors and and igniter. The rest of the store had that same vibe- this place is for glampers, not outdoorsy people. Most of the gear I saw felt overpriced and more for looks than functionality. Despite having $40 of "free money" to spend, I didn't find anything to buy.
What shocked me though was going through their used section. I picked a jacket, it had many holes in it. Worse, the zipper literally fell on the floor. Why would they even sell that? I get this is used but you'd be shocked seeing this at goodwill in town.
Anyway, I'm not a "local sports shop" purist, but I guarantee that we're better served by Backcountry, pine needle, outdoor gear exchange, gardenswartz etc... both in terms of price, quality and selection than at REI. Based on what I saw, I think we can all be sure that those stores aren't going away...
Read moreMy family and I were excited to shop at the new REI in Durango. I was looking for shoes and my husband was there to browse. I tried on the shoes and found a pair I liked. I noticed my family were still browsing so I shopped around as well. As I was browsing, numerous times my husband and I were asked if we needed assistance. We informed them we did not. After asking, the salesperson stuck around and it appeared they were surveilling us. It was disheartening to be treated like this, as we shop regularly at other REI stores. We did not make our purchase instead we went downtown Durango to another shoe store. They gladly accepted our money. All I ask is that your staff do better, not every person of color that comes into your store is...
Read moreMy wife and I popped into this store on our last day of vacation before flying home. We were asked numerous times if we needed assistance. We informed them we did not. After asking, the salesperson stuck around and it appeared they were surveilling us. It was disheartening to be treated like this, as we are REI members. My wife opted not to try anything on even though several items caught her eye. Not very much overall in this store compared to other REIs. Not...
