Crunch Fitness - Fall River — Local services in Fall River

I actually liked this gym and had the Peak membership for a year when I started in October 2022. A year later in October 2023 I decided to downgrade to a Base membership since I knew I wasn't going to be using the other gyms. This time I paid for the entire year upfront, and then paid the annual fee, which I was made aware of. However, I wasn't made aware of the hidden "convenience fee".

In May of 2024, I caught on that I was being charged a $2/mo convenience fee which I found strange. I mentioned it to the staff and one guy said that they typically charge that to members who pay monthly. The guy said it would get resolved, so I didn't sweat it.

By early August 2024, I forgot about it, but noticed that I was charged in July for this same fee. I called and was assured that it would get reversed or refunded, but that I shouldn't worry because they'd make sure it wouldn't happen again. WRONG!

In late August I was hit again. I went to the gym in the morning around 10:30am to speak to a manager, but was told they weren't going to be there for another hour. A different guy at the front saw my account and said that they'd have the manager reach out to me before the end of the day. That also never happened.

The following day, I called at 1:50pm and finally got the "manager". They said they couldn't hear me over the phone, but that I should come in to speak to them in person. I get there an hour later only to find out that the manager was off at 2pm. Why would you tell me to come in when you know you're leaving in 10 minutes? Very unprofessional and complete BS.

Anyway, I hope they resolve these payment issues. The last thing I want is to be charged for a membership that I won't be using at this place. Some of the other 1 star reviews with this same issue about money not being refunded and poor management go back over 4 years at the time of me writing this (August 2024). I know they're going to say to email them at: manager@crunchfallriver.com which I've already done before writing this.

I've also included screenshots of who's registered to do business as Crunch within Massachusetts in case someone wants know who's responsible, it's public information. If it gets bad enough, someone can always write a 93A Demand Letter to one of these since they've been doing unfair business practices for a while now.

Let's see if they get something right. I've never had this issue with Planet Fitness.

UPDATE: On 10/14/2024 I got a call from the manager saying that they reversed the numerous charges (Never left her name on the message btw) and got refund the same week. Extremely disgusting customer service by management. Very unfortunate at such a nice clean gym. I was told over the phone I needed to go to the gym to cancel which wasn’t an issue at all. I was also told it was too far in the month to waive the monthly charge but canceling would definitely stop the renewal fee. Completely understandable. I noticed $105 missing from my account a few days later and it was from crunch. I was still charged the renewal fee. Upon contacting the gym I was told my membership was never canceled. After being asked when I came in to cancel & who helped me I was told my membership was never canceled because it wasn’t processed properly by the individual who helped me the day I came in. Their system record only showed that I scanned in my key card as if for a regular gym visit. I went in & canceled on 12/24 but my cancellation was not processed until 12/27 when I called after noticing the charge. We are all human so I’m sure it was an honest mistake on her part & I simply asked for a refund of the overcharged amount due to it being an employee error. After being transferred to the gym manager I was denied the refund and told it was my fault for coming in too close to the payment date. I corrected him and explained that I was just told that my membership was for sure never processed for cancellation. I was being lied to and blamed so I asked to speak to corporate. The first response to that request was “we don’t usually contact corporate for small amounts of money like that” & then “nobody has ever asked for the corporate number.” After waiting for him to “find the number” I was given a franchiser phone number that specifically states it isn’t for customer support in the prerecorded intro message. I found it very interesting that the gym manager could not provide me with a customer support contact. Then after calling the manager back I was told I needed to contact ABC financial. I called ABC only to be told that I was misinformed by the gym manager and that this was a matter that needed to be handled by the gym because they have no control over it. I called crunch again & I was told I would be contacted by corporate that day. Here we are 2 weeks later and I have yet to be contacted. Fortunately, debit charges can be disputed...

I love it here! Been a regular for about 4 years now, and happy to report consistent and positive changes. The membership is affordable and they have a wide variety of equipment and free weights, including 3 large squat racks. This is a good gym for all levels, and the community is overall a positive and supportive environment. The classes are fun if you’re just looking to get a workout in and burn some calories with friends without having to bring your own workout plan. The staff are friendly and attentive, and though there have been many changes since I’ve been a member, I’ve never met a staff member that I didn’t like.

My only feedback are things you’d typically find in all gyms and honestly nothing I’d dock them points for, still giving 5 stars because I love the place. Just some pointers in case anyone is reading for the sake of improvements. The machines could be cleaner, but most members will wipe off equipment after use. It’s annoying when folks don’t unrack their weights or just leave stuff around, but that’s more on the members than the staff. Also, I see a lot of teenagers and newbies come in and “train” each other improperly which I know can cause injuries, so I like it when the actual Trainers step in to prevent people who are not certified from offering bad advice to other participants. I don’t like seeing people get hurt and sometimes I wish that the staff would spend more time on the floor to address the everyday issues. It can also get extremely busy during peek times, but again, that’s typical of most gyms.

All things considered, this is a good gym that offers a lot for a very reasonable price. People are mostly good to each other and respect the place. Hope it always...
