Locally Crafted LLC — Local services in Gaithersburg

Today (8/4/2023), my girlfriend, her brother, and myself were in Locally Crafted over in the Rio. We were browsing, I found a candle that my girlfriend liked, and were going to buy after browsing a bit more.

However, one employee, I didn't catch her name (description: a white woman, fairly short (under 5'4''), shoulder-ish length brownish/reddish hair, probably in her 50s), came up to me within a MINUTE of me being a little bit apart from my girlfriend and her brother (who are both white), and asked me (I'm black) if I "needed help" while glancing at the things I was browsing through and my hands.

I told her, "No thanks," but that she could go ask other customers if they needed assistance. She stayed in front of me and said "Help is for everyone." I told her "Yes, but I notice that I'm the only one you asked if they needed help." She gave a small smile and returned back to the register after looking at my girlfriend and her brother once I walked back over to them.

We put the candle back and have no plans on ever returning. I can't speak to the rest of the employees or the company as a whole. I don't even know if this review will be read or make a difference. But I do know that none of us will ever give them our business again.

Whether she intended to racially profile me, stereotype me, or not that is the way it came across to me, my girlfriend, and her brother who overheard the exchange. No apologies were offered and she watched us walk out of the store and continued to look at me until we were out of sight. Do with this...
