My family and I went to Academy to buy our kids shoes. We arrived around 8 pm today Monday 3/10/2025. We shopped for almost 40-45 min measuring our kids feet for shoes. (Note: ours kids are 5 and 2), it didn't go super smoothly but we had to get it done. Not to mention we saw 1 particular Academy associate/ employee at the shoe department that never offered help or assistance. When we finally made it to the register (only one register was open). We were waiting behind 3 customers waiting to check out. We were called to service desk. As we were getting checked out by a tall African American male. he tells us our total I proceed to use tap to pay with our debit card. My card read error BUT Iit never declined. another tall older African American male walks in behind the service desk asked, " they Declined?" Why he asked or why was it his business..I don't know. Than he walks back by and with a rude tone and pointing asks "do yal have a tag for those crocs?" ..I replied those are my sons crocs. He mumbles under his breath. So I said go check your cameras. He replied, excuse ne, in a louder tone I say "Go check your cameras".. he replied, that's where I'm going and I said ok to which he threatens with calling the cops. We felt humiliated, embarrassed, and his defamatory remarks were heard by other customers and other employees. there was an employee leaning against the counter at the service desk (which was the same employee that was in the shoe department when we were trying to size our kids for shoes) and the employee that was actually checking us out. I'm not certain how we can proceed with this matter it is absolutely necessary for it to be addressed. Absolutely not the way to approach any customer with unprofessional unproven acussations of shoplifting!
Please advice us on how Academy sports and outdoors handles situations of this nature. It is definitely serious and would like to get information on how to escalate this matter. Please reply with a corporate email where we can write to...
Read moreMy boyfriend and brother who are both black with dreadlocks were racially profiled by the female who works in the gun department of Academy Sports in Greensboro, NC today. She continued to follow them on each isle and pretended to fiddle with random items on the isle (assuming she was trying to play it off as if she was not watching). She never ever ever ever in her entire life of having these two young black men in her presence - not once offered help, no one offered help- they just continued to stare and follow. There was a male in the gun department who could not move from behind the counter but he continued to watch every move that he could for whatever reason. My boyfriend has a credit card there and attends this store all the time for his fishing supplies, at least once a week and this has never happened. I am not sure what her motives were on this particular Sunday afternoon in the gun department, but apparently she should have been doing freight (her job) and not following the customers. Either way, there were plenty of other people, specifically white, in the store who could have been followed but idk maybe it’s just easier to follow black people to see if they are stealing? I wouldn’t know because I am also black, maybe she felt the need to save the store in case two black guys decided to steal guns or ammo? I wouldn’t know, but the manager that I spoke with was very adamant about speaking with the teammates because this is not how they operate at Academy. I went to customer service to return a product that was damaged ( was originally purchased yesterday) I was standing in line.. literally every person behind the customer service desk was starring at me as if I was an alien.. no one greeted… no one was asked if I needed anything. The rude people were as described ( Tall African American gentleman with a feminine voice ) a light skinned girl with long eyelashes ( I think she was really a cashier because after she got done gossiping she went back to her register ) and a White girl with a pony tail.
My encounter yesterday was also a bad one but I didn’t leave a review for that. I will now. I asked the cashier a question about a helmet that I purchased… she don’t know the answer to my question so she went to customer service to ask a young lady.., the young lady literally looked at her as if she asked a dumb question and said something smart. When I looked at her she tried to play it off.
It is very simple IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK IN CUSTOMER SERVICE DON’T . Your customers are the reason you get PAID . No business= No money . Have more respect!!!! These people come to interviews and pretend that they have great customer service skills only for the managers to be fooled!
