I agree with the other reviews - the woman behind the counter was very pretentious and condescending. While we were not scolded for touching items, we were reprimanded for taking a photo. My husband & I were drawn in by a large platter displayed in the window. But some placemats in the front of the store caught my eye, and my husband stopped to take a photo of the tag showing the dimensions, as we were looking for a specific size. The woman very quickly told us that photos were not allowed, as everyone who came in would want to take a picture, and couldn't we imagine what that would be like? Oh yes....total chaos eye roll.
My husband tried to explain that he only took a photo of the tag to document the dimensions and she proceeded to tell us that all rectangular placemats are the same standard size. Really? I'm currently sitting at my kitchen counter writing this from my laptop which is sitting on a rectangular placemat that is a different size than the rectangular placement on my table behind me.
Needless to say, we promptly left the store and I took my $$ elsewhere. As I suspected, I found the exact same placements ("Chilewich" )at Crate & Barrel for a much more reasonable price. I would imagine this is the true reason they don't want customers taking photos - because their items are overpriced (and not as exclusive as they would like you to think) and they don't want you shopping around.
Hey - by the way - the folks at Crate and Barrel are much nicer!
To borrow a phrase from Rodney Dangerfield "this place is a crummy snobitorium". I suspect that customers of a certain class with money to spend are treated differently than us "regular folk" looking to make a small purchase.
Bottom line - get over yourself and your store, lady. And stop judging your potential customers by appearance. We had $$ to spend, but you'll never see it. This store is for folks with more money than sense and manners. Unless you have endless disposable income and multiple houses to decorate, don't bother shopping here. The epitome of snobby arrogance.
RESPONSE TO THE OWNER'S COMMENT: I have seen you mention multiple times in your response to negative reviews that you have been in business for over 30 years, and that is commendable. I know it is difficult for small business to survive with the evolution of on line shopping.
However, in those 30+ years, you should have learned that the only response to an unsatisfied shopper should be " We are sorry your experience was less than excellent and we hope you will allow us the opportunity to correct that." Your response to my review (and the other negative reviews here) only...
Read moreExtremely rude! The owners are a husband and wife. The wife is helpful and the husband is incredibly rude. After spending $400 he hands us our products in a tiny bag that would be a pain to walk around with as it had no handles And was very small. I asked if I can take the bag with the handles instead, he looks at me and says “I’d rather not. Those are very small item”. Just WOW. Okay weirdos. Keep your bags. Bye.
EDITED to reply to the owner: What I find "weird" is that as business owners you are choosing to ignore what your clients are clearly trying to communicate to you. You have a lovely shop and you know your craft, however, you two can come across rude. Several reviews mention this. A simple change in tone can fix this. I don't mean to bash, simply sharing my experience.
Also, I did not reach over to grab several bags. I was standing by the counter, saw ONE bag and asked if I may take one (I wanted to check that the bad was not too big). Such a simple request. If you are not handing out bags for eco reasons, all you had to do was state that. Denying me a bag after I asked for one with no explanation and...
Read moreEasily the worst shopping experience I’ve had in Mystic. Incredibly rude and condescending customer service — when checking in on prices we were rudely scoffed at for asking if a price was lower than she thought reasonable (based on confusing price labeling). The entire store is papered in signs saying no touching or photos of merchandise is allowed — we couldn’t even flip over placemats to see what the reversible side was. And to top it off, we were loudly chastised and shooed from the store when a member of our party who was done shopping looked at a text on her phone (not answering a call, no noises coming out of it, and standing out of the way), and informed that that behavior got in the way of her 500 customers — while we were the only customers in the store! We left immediately and plan to never return, and based on the reviews preceding mine, this wasn’t a one-off experience. Couldn’t recommend less, take your business to other far more deserving stores...
