I really wanted to love this place, it's been on my list to stop in for awhile. Finally had the chance to and will most likely only be back if there are no other options.
Ordered bulgogi, wonton soup, chil garlic ramen, and Shanghai noodles.
the bulgogi was the best out of the bunch but I am still convinced the brought out a bipbambop instead (no bulgogi I know comes with an egg on top). Flavor was good, kimchi was great but the cuts of meat were tough and overcooked.
the wonton soup lacked flavor and the wontons were more dumplings than wonton
spicy garlic ramen broth was basically hot water. While the chili paste had good kick it was the only flavor in the whole dish. The noodles were clumped together and the chasu was also tough / overcooked.
the Shanghai noodles had decent flavor but again it lacked in general.
service was really rough, our primary waitress was super slow and unresponsive - luckily she had help and her help was amazing. It was not busy at all yet it took 10-15 mins before in between being checked on or getting credit card back after check was dropped.
while the restaurant looks amazing it definitely had cut some corners. The booth seats were not connected and moved each time anyone moved around. There are also some planks of the wood floor tented up and making it easy to trip and hard to move chair back.
Considering the whole meal cost around $70 this was just awful value for the money.
I do hope they improve as I want to see an Asian woman chef do well but right now I can't get...
Read moreEdit: Went back a month later since I wanted something quick to eat at work. I ordered a $10 wonton soup and it came in a pint container. How is 2 pieces of overcooked wontons and a leaf of bok choy worth $10?? I'm officially done giving my money to this business until there is some change.
Me and my boyfriend have been to Samurai a few times over the last 2 years. I’m not sure if they’ve changed cooks or something but the quality of food has definitely deteriorated. We ordered the samurai baos, tonkotsu ramen, and spicy garlic ramen. The samurai bao was ok, nothing special. I had the tonkotsu ramen and was extremely disappointed. They changed eggs from the soft boiled soy sauce eggs to a “soft” poached egg. I got a hard boiled poached egg. I informed the waitress and she brought back another poached egg but it was also hard when I cut it open. And it was cold. So they probably made a large batch that were all hard eggs. The chashu was also extremely lacking. The pork seemed to be boiled or slow cooked for 24 hours because it fell apart, and not in the good way. The pork skin appeared grey and didn’t taste good. The spicy garlic ramen was ok but they seemed to have change the noodles in it. The chashu was fine for that ramen bowl.
Overall, I don’t think I’ll be returning anytime soon. I wish they didn’t change their original recipes because they were so much better than what we experienced today. The service was very nice though so I don’t blame them for the...
Read moreHighly disappointing experience. I'd been excited about this restaurant ever since I heard of the plans to open it. The owners also own Thai Sawasdee in Groton and Pink Basil in Mystic, two restaurants which I frequent, so I had high expectations for their new ramen adventure.
We visited about two weeks after opening day for lunch. The restaurant is beautiful inside - sports bar at the front, ramen in the center, Korean Barbecue in the back room. Perhaps a little overambitious? We ordered the pork buns. Delicious, tender, fatty pork sandwiched in a little pork bun which they unfortunately decided to slather in chipotle mayonnaise. Please remove the chipotle mayo. That's absurd. Followed up with the garlic ramen and Nagasaki fried ramen. I've had similar dishes in Boston/NYC and overseas, but this was truly disappointing. The broth was bland, uncomplicated, and the ingredients were sparse. The Nagasaki fried ramen had an unpleasant bitterness to it. 15 dollars for the garlic ramen and 17 for the fried ramen. If a restaurant is going to charge that much for ramen it had better be amazing, or it had better be a lot of food. This was neither.
We hope they improve. We know they just opened - perhaps still dealing with some logistics - and are willing to go back in a few months. It's not the worst thing in the world, it's just...
