When I walked into this establishment with my son, I first noticed the scent of some sort of incense, but I did not appreciate it as I do other incenses. The atmosphere was spiritually off-putting.
As I was looking around the store, my son escaped me. I called for him, and the store attendant / cashier told me that I needed to stay by him. That seemed acceptable and reasonable to me.
My son and I then went over to what appeared to be a kid-toy section. I pulled down a bin full of plastic toys, and he started to look through them. I then walked a few feet away from him to look at some of what the store had to offer. The store attendant then told me again that I have to be with my son - except this time I knew where he was and that he was not playing with fragile items - and I was nearby him. In any case, I went over by my son. Then the clerk told me that he was not to look through the toy bin like that, as the owners don’t want the bin on the ground - or something to that matter. This was odd to me because he was looking through what appeared to be plastic junk toys (see posted picture). In response, I irritatedly asked her how my son is supposed to look through the toys, to which she responded that I could show him the toys myself, picking them out (presumably individually) from the box while it is on the shelf. I told her that that did not make sense but cleaned up the toys and returned the box to its place on the shelf as requested. We left the store shortly after this interaction, having been made uncomfortable.
It should also be noted that the prices here seem quite inflated. I did not look at a lot of stuff here, but I did look at the jean jackets, and I believe all of them were over $200, which was ridiculous to me. Perhaps these sell well to Japanese or other Asian tourists, so they raise the prices on them; that...
Read moreSo glad I made the time to visit this amazing place. The store itself is a smorgasboard for the eyes. Aloha shirts of every shape size and colour in every direction you look interspliced with antiques on display. But the shirts (for me at least), stole the show. They were organised by style and size, with the true antique ones hanging from the ceiling, and some of these looked amazing. Depending on the age and rarity there were some real bargains here, and if you are a serious collector, the serious stuff is here too priced appropriately - but man - incrediible stuff. The lady who served me was incredibly helpful, polite and easy to talk to, and I left there with 2 amazing shirts (one new, one second hand), one of which I am wearing today, now that I have returned to Australia. I have bought quite a few aloha shirts from second hand stores here in AU but nothing like the 2 I bought from Bailey's. This is definitely one of those places where, if you find yourself in Honolulu and you are looking for something which definitively says 'I've been to Hawaii' without the use of a megaphone, then you have to come here and buy at least one shirt. Like, have,...
Read moreI was racially profiled here! I have been to baileys many times and always showed friends the place. But this last New Year’s Eve day I went to the shop to buy myself a few shirts for my birthday. As soon as I walked in a tall white women approached me and practically never left my side the entire time I was in there. I was the only person in the store that was not white or Asian. And it was obvious that she was keeping an eye on me and only me! If she wasn’t watching me and Asian women behind the counter was. The caucasian woman followed me through the store for over half an hour. She acted like she was helping me but it was beyond overkill as nobody else was getting such help. She would watch me while hanging up shirts or cleaning something near me. I asked my friend (of Asian decent) that went with me if he felt like they were watching him too and he had no clue that the two women did this to me as he shopped freely and felt comfortable. I’m honestly sad this happened as I did really like this store but now never...
