The UFC Gym in Honolulu doesn't have the best customer service. The staff seems to have been instructed to screen those coming in to the gym. They can be nice but are always ready to be on the defensive and think your doing something negative. I have tried calling the gym over the past few weeks to get the corporate information so I could write a letter to the president of the company. The staff gives me the run around and when I ask to have one of the managers call me they never call me back. Also I tried taking a Capoeria class and was highly disappointed by the Instructor and the seasoned athletes in the class. The instructor never introduced himself, I don't know his name and he didn't explain anything about Capoeria, the culture behind it and the words used. He did however laugh many times at my mistakes and continued to make the atmosphere uncomfortable by only engaging with student's he was familiar with. I also felt that because I am a gay american, the men in the class including the instructor were homophobic and treated me like I was a person walking around with the flu. Only one person helped me through the class and it was another student that happened to be young and gay. I am a highly educated person and I know exactly were Capoeria originates from and the cultures behind it. Seeing a man who is not a part of the cultures that Capoeria comes from teach the class in the way he did, offended me as a person of African Descent. I don't even think he cared and look at it as "Oh well this guy here is never coming back, hahahah". The instructors at this gym are great IF you take the group exercise class. Stick with the kickboxing class, the instructor actually cares about you and wants to help you grow. If you take the other classes with former bodybuilders and UFC athletes be prepared to see weird looks, have fake interactions with the instructor and its about the money with them. If you do decide to go here and stay here. Pay for the least expensive package. I pay $93.00/month so I have access to all the classes, which I now see as a mistake. Also you can not bring a guest or friend with you. I was originally told that in my contract I could have my fiance come, now when he try's to come with me to help me with my weight lifting, I am told that he needs to pay a $10.00 fee. I believe that the UFC gym is an ELITIST gym and they are discriminatory but in an indivisible way. You must know what to look for and what to see in order to understand my last sentence. Most of the people working out in the gym are people who compete in Fitness and Bodybuilding competitions and/or UFC Fighters, there is always tension felt in the air and if you don't look like a bodybuilder or fitness model you do get strange looks and stares from those who do look like bodybuilders or fitness models. I even had an experience where I formally knew a young lady from outside the gym that is a fitness model and competes. She became an IFBB Pro, I approached her at the gym and she started acting stuck up and as if she didn't have time to speak to the little people now that she is a pro. When I would say hello, she acted like this was an issue and started having her husband stay with her and give me dirty looks. Wow! All this from people who formally introduced themselves to me at other gyms but now that there at UFC gym and consider IFBB PROs they have no time to just nod hello or talk to people they know. A very disheartening and insensitive situation, for those trying to achieve their own goals. I plan on cancelling my membership very soon and going to another gym. Think very very hard before going to this gym and don't trust the membership people its all about numbers, quotas and statistics to them. Its a money and numbers game for them. However there are some staff and instructors who are kind and want to help you but it seems after a while that they are under some tension to fill quotas . Thank you for reading my post, I hope it helps you in your...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreItās unfortunately been three years of membership here that itās taken me to get fed up with this place. While some of the staff has always been super friendly, the gym is incredibly poorly run. First of all the parking is absolutely atrocious. Sometimes I have to spend 30 to 40 minutes of my 90 minute workout just waiting for a parking spot to open up at peak hours. Even at non-peak hours most of the time there are people parking in the lot from other places around the neighborhood like the yoga studio across the street or the Tesla shop that fill up the spot spots reserved for the gym. The other issue they have is their street is owned privately, so it is not maintained by the city and thus is always in need of repairs. Iāve bottomed out my car several times because of the craters that form in their parking lot.
If you can get past the parking, the gym seems nice at first but itās a 50/50 shot if the employee checking you in will say a word to you let alone be friendly and say thank you for coming by. Yeah the gym is huge and there are a lot of options for your workouts, which is great. However, one of the more increasingly frustrating factors is that it can still get crowded at certain times thus not having enough equipment for everyone to go around. Thatās just normal gym life I suppose, however even in non-peak hours Iāve had other members and unfortunately many personal trainers come and set up their workouts right on top of me when on the turf area or in the free-weight section. Iāve mentioned this to staff members on numerous occasions and yet somehow it continues to happen. Much of their equipment was replaced or renewed in the last six months however, many of it is already derelict from overuse or people just trashing it for whatever reason. Thatās not always the gyms fault, however it is just an unfortunate part of working out here that some of the equipment is still not up to par or doesnāt work properly.
And then we get to the likely worst part of all of it the locker rooms. I do see cleaning staff on site on occasion, but the locker rooms are getting to be pretty gross and maybe not the worst on island but definitely not as great as you would think it should be for what you pay to be a member here. I canāt speak for the womenās side, but the menās lockers - half are broken and even if you put a lock on it, the door will still open.
As far as the bathrooms go ,the menās side is constantly out of order, toilets and urinals are blocked off for days, weeks, sometimes even months at a time. When they come back online, most of them leak all over the floor. The shower situation has been horrible since the day I became a member here. I donāt think Iāve ever seen all five shower stalls operational at one time. Something is always wrong and one of them is at least out of order and that being said theyāre also pretty gross. They do not get fully cleaned or sanitized nearly enough.
And then, of course, the sauna which was closed for some time during their renovations and I was thinking they would rebuild it properly. They did not they just replaced the floor that had been missing for two years. The wood and lighting in the sauna is constantly broken and letās just be honest here it smells horrible in there. I have been to other UFC locations on island and they do not present like this so I assume that it is not ājust how saunas areā.
I really had high hopes for this place because it could be a great large space for people to use but really over the last three years. It just seems like the people who own and run it are mainly just out to get your membership fee and not really fix anything that actually needs fixing.
Iāll be canceling my...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI gave them a whole month to refund me my one month gym membership. I contacted them three times and they failed. I'm still down $50 and highly disappointed in their customer service.
I'm a recent grad from college. When I came back from college over the past two summers, I go to this UFC because I enjoy the workout facility and the overall spacious gym. My first two summers there have been great. I would have recommended this gym to everyone. There are some drawbacks such as the sometimes dirty equipment, the lack of parking, or the gym meat heads who won't share weights, but I dealt with it. I enjoyed the friendly staff. However, my opinion changed this summer.
Here's the story. Coming back to Hawaii for 2.5 weeks, I thought I could get a deal for a membership in that short period. I called in, asking about the $15 for 15 day offer to see if it applied to returning members and the person who picked up the phone said it did. I went in, and it was not valid. I used to sign up with Juan Gomez, a membership specialist. He's been there for a few years, and he's been cool. I thought he cared about the members, but I was wrong. It seems like he only cares about how many people he can sign up for a gym plan. Walking in this time, Juan persuaded me to sign up for a one month gym plan for $50. He said that if I come in three times, it'd be worth it because each walk-in is $15 (still a bit expensive for my budget I thought). I agreed initially, but after carefully thinking during my workout about my time in Hawaii, I figured that it'd be better to go hiking with friends instead of being a gym rat. So I told Juan that I wanted to cancel it. He said that he already processed my gym membership request and that it will take a few business days to refund my money. So I paid for a walk-in ($15) instead. Yet in that moment, Juan told the front desk right in front of my face that "we need to cancel his membership because he can't even bother to come in three times!" Excuse me, Juan. But let me do what I want with my free time. I left with a bitter taste in my mouth.
Over the following month, I called in three times and they said the overall online system is delayed on payments. They promised me that I would receive my money by last week. Where is it??
I know it's only $50 and that is chump change to some people, but considering how I called three times and having been told that I would have gotten refunded by now, I am highly disappointed in the unprofessional service at this UFC gym, especially with Juan. I have now filed a credit card dispute and am excited to get back my money that I requested back a month ago. I'm not sure if I will ever return to this gym.
Edit: They finally refunded it. AFTER one month and eight days, and AFTER I posted this...
