I waited a while before writing this review because I would have rather forgotten about the situation, but unfortunately I just couldn’t shake it off
On April 3, I walked into the Copperfield target with some children’s clothing that I needed to return (every single item had a receipt via mobile app). The associate Mary began assisting me with my return. I mentioned that I was returning Cat and Jack children’s clothing. Mary began explaining that the policy has since changed and despite the fact I had every single receipt, I could ONLY receive store credit. Mary explained that this store credit could ONLY be used to purchase ONLY children’s clothing and that she would load the funds onto a gift card. Mary then told me that I had to leave the gift card there at the front, while I went to get the children’s items to exchange. Mary stated that due to company policy, the gift card funds had to be used all then and there in that very visit. I only returned half of my purchases because Mary made me feel as though I was a criminal doing something horrible, when all I was simply doing was following company policy down to the letter. I left the customer service center. I left the gift card with Mary (she refused to give me my gift card with my funds- essentially hijacking my own money). I walked around and came across another associate. I asked the woman about the policy who was not too familiar. I then placed a phone call to customer service because as a frequent target shopper, I wanted to educate myself in the event I was incorrect. The CSR explained to me that Mary, in fact was wrong. There was nothing that states I can only receive store credit and not original form of payment. There was no such thing as I can ONLY use those funds for ONLY children’s clothes. Nothing whatsoever. The CSR urged me to request a supervisor. I went back up to the customer service desk and requested a supervisor. I don’t remember her name (Hispanic) but she was very understanding and mirrored what the phone rep said.
This situation, 3 weeks later still sits in my head. I feel as though I was racially profiled by Mary. Perhaps she saw my skin tone and felt the need to invent her own rules and use me to align with that.
Mary could really stand to use additional Customer service training, along with Diversity and Equality training and support. For Mary to continually mentioned that said policy had changed because of abuse and such made me feel as though she thought I was an abused and scammer of policies. Texas is a bit different from NYC where I grew up, but I must say this was my very first experience with passive racism and I am bothered. For now, I will stick to the target in Memorial Or Eldridge because even after 3 weeks, I still go over in my mind if I said something that may have triggered Mary into creating her own rules based off her personal bias and...

Read moreThe employees are unfortunately bothered by the customers no matter how small your question/request is. I try my best to check out in the self scanners to avoid employee interaction because I’m always terrified of being met with passive-aggressive comments, eye rolls, and in one instance an employee mocking my accent while checking out. I’ve had just one positive experience in the electronics section by some of the more relaxed employees back when I made a big tv purchase, but in any other department I always feel like a nuisance to the employees, and I get it—it’s their job to just clock in, work, and clock out with the least amount of distractions because they’re tasked with so much; with a background in retail I like to think that sometimes I understand that some customers are malicious and aren’t always as innocent, but it’s just a shame that the shared annoyed-attitude of the employees has been constant this entire 2019 year that I’ve visited there. Just yesterday, I ordered two drinks and a muffin and the barista washed down the counter top with a gray looking wet cloth and then proceeded to make the drinks without washing her hands, yuck.
As for the physicality of the store: the cafe tables are always sticky, the baristas/food preparers are always understaffed, the soda machines have dark/black mold looking stains on the spouts, and the bathroom always smells of sewage; I’m disappointed because I love target so much, but this one isn’t...
