I have been coming to these market for the past 5 days and it was great until today. I went to buy a bottle of pineapple wine as a gift for my family, I was with my boyfriend and he decided he wanted to also buy the same bottle to give as a gift to his mother, so he went to get a bottle. I went to pay for my bottle handed my id to the clerk and my boyfriend came behind me with another bottle, the clerk asked for his id but because he didn’t had his id she refused to sell me the bottle of wine I went to buy. I understand refusing him but could not comprehend why I couldn’t buy mine. He doesn’t even drink. My boyfriend was going to buy some other item, so they charge me for that and it was after that I figured they couldn’t sell me the wine because he had no id. It was extremely confusing and the feeling I felt was not nice. We were both confuse and ask why. They said strict rules and dismiss us without explanation. Since we were waiting for food my boyfriend felt bad about the whole situation and went to get his id to the hotel meanwhile I went back to ask why they could not sell me the wine if I had my id and that’s what I went there to buy. I had bought the same wine a few days prior and had no issues. They called a supervisor cause apparently they could not explained themselves the reason and kept being dismissive. Then my boyfriend came back with his id and we ended buying the wine which I regret. Cause after that I should have gone somewhere else to get the wine. So I wonder what do parents do when they go there and buy alcohol with their kids in tow cause I’m pretty sure they don’t ask for the kids id. What if the other person is in the car waiting for you? Like WHAT? It doesn’t make sense! It just doesn’t! Anyways I won’t be going back there, the whole thing left a...
Read moreThis is a review of the ABC store in the Coconut Marketplace - not yet listed but it opened in May 2016. ABC stores are well known to visitors to Hawaii and, like most tourists, I’d make a stop there for things like macadamias and beer. Yes, they can be significantly more expensive than other markets – for example, on this visit a 5 oz. bag of Boulder Canyon chips was $5.69, and a 6-pack of Kona beer was $11. But the selection is decent for the size of the store and the staff members are usually friendly.
However, for environmental responsibility I’m giving ABC 1/5 green stars because I was horrified to see that they had coffee for sale in Styrofoam cups. Yep, Styrofoam, as in expanded polystyrene, the kind of plastic that’s non-recyclable, and fly-away light… just waiting to find its destination in the ocean 100 yards away. ABC: please replace your cups – I know paper cups are not ideal either (lined with plastic), but they are a lot better than polystyrene. Considering the huge garbage problem in the Pacific Ocean and on Hawaiian beaches (like Kamilo) I would have thought ABC would have more respect...
Read moreWe visited this outdoor style shopping location several times during our stay in Kapaa. Mostly frequented the island marketplace and chicken in a barrel bbq restaurant.
Both carried great deli and food selections for a quick meal. We also picked up souvenirs, t shirts, and take out food and drink items. Save your accumulated receipts for the island marketplace. They give away a gift with every $100 spent. We ended up with a beautiful Hawaiian flower calendar and coffee cup. They also have a cold/hot deli, fresh coffee, juice drinks, and ice cream vendors inside their location. We will definitely return in the future when we visit Kapaa.
The chicken in a barrel bbq serves delicious chicken, pork ribs, and bbq selections, along with salads, fries, coleslaw, and drinks. Does not disappoint.
There is plenty of free parking available in front and back of this...
