From the moment I walked into Joseph’s Upholstery on Pico, I knew I was in a real upholstery shop. My father Mario (watching over see picture) was an amazing upholsterer that would look under the chairs in the Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan and could take an old chair that someone had thrown out and turn it into something beautiful. I recognized the old heavy duty sewing machine on a wooden stand and the smells of the fabric. The beautiful, controlled chaos. I instantly felt this was the real deal. Eddie was great. He helped me pick out a thick wearable fabric that I will have and love for many years. The down cushions were getting a little sad and flat, so Eddie said he could plump them up with some down inserts which he did. When I picked up the cushions, I knew they looked good, but it was hard to imagine how beautiful my couch would look when I put it all together. It’s a giant couch which I bought for the comfort of my 6’2” son and the results are breathtaking. The last time I purchased slipcovers for my giant couch, nine years ago it was not a pleasant experience. First of all they weren’t nice like Eddie. They didn’t pre-shrink the fabric properly so it wasn’t long before the zipper in the back wasn’t closing. Because the fabric was so tight it was also hard for me to put on and off. The fabric that goes under the muslin fabric that is part of the slipcover under the cushions was thin and very shortly was ripped and shredded. I discussed all this with Eddie and this time we agreed that besides the pre-shrinking, there would be no zippers. I’ve taken a shot of the Velcro connect in the back which I love. The muslin under the cushions is a nice thick fabric that I can tell will last many years. It seems weird to even call this “slipcovers” since that hardly describes how substantial and fabulous this new fabric is covering my couch. I didn’t meet Juan Xiquin, but Eddie told me he’s the one that did the actual work. I’m picky, obviously I’m the daughter of an upholsterer so I had high hopes, if not expectations. All expectations were met and exceeded. Worth every penny. I’m so happy to write this review. I love my...
Read moreSo grateful to Juan and the team. I came to the shop on Friday, December 29th to have them cut an expensive unopened twin memory foam mattress and upholster it to turn it into a cushion.
He then told me I could return it and they could do the entire project for just about the same cost. He guided me thru selecting the kind of memory foam I wanted and helped me select from multiple swathes of fabric and nylon.
In the process he showed me a couple really nice fabrics and I decided to get some pillows made as belated Christmas gifts.
I called an embroidery shop that could help, and then like a pro he just cut me some fabric measured it by eyeing it, and told me to bring it back the next morning and he'll get it rushed in time for my flight that night.
I was late to pick it up so he literally took it home with him and allowed me to pick it up from him after closing. He even said they made it so it could compress well within a suitcase.
Whole project went from idea to execution in like 18 hours, in time for my flight on the night of the 30th. When most businesses had already closed for the year.
My family loved the pillows.
Came back early in the new year to grab the cushion too, and it was perfect. Had a zipper and everything for washing if needed.
Wildly impressed by their speed of delivery and quality of work and so appreciative of their positivity and helpfulness throughout the process. Will refer people to him and come back...
Read moreIt seems like we didn't get lucky with the shop as fellow reviewers.
Our experience is to proceed with caution.
We purchased expensive Mohair fabric for 4 Spanish chairs. Unfortunately the end result was extremly poor. Now we have to purchase more fabrics and start from scratch.
The corner of the chairs were cut and fold with stitch lines... Bottom of the cushion of one chair was not secured to the wood frame. Another chair did not line up to the edge of the frame. Please see pictures attached.
The upholsterer, Eddie, said I can unscrew the seats myself... and bring them back along with the original chair we have, so he can compare, and possibly shave off the cushion in order to re-use the existing fabric. First of all, the original chair seat is about the same height. The stitch lines they cut were 2 inches long. A good portion of the cushion must be shaved off... Where not all dinning chairs will be at the same height.
In addition, the owner, Joseph, said in a text "The reason that you have a cut in the corners is because we put a new sponge, also the fabric you brought is different from the previous one."
Is that an excuse to seek justification why we should accept the quality? Or is it their standard of craftsmanship? Go to any store, I have never seen chairs like ours were done with visible cutting lines in front!
We requested our money back, not include the fabric portion....
