Hello to all planning to stay at the Carlotta- enjoy your stay, but you may be interested to know that you are staying in the former apartments of a long term and beautiful community of artists, musicians and old Hollywood performers- a community that was ruthlessly evicted, price gouged and intimidated out when the current owners bought the place. Many had been there decades. One old actor with HIV who was spending his last days there was forced out, it broke his heart.
The corridors used to be full of generations of paintings, photos and plants, and the residents gathered at the weekend for big fancy dress parties in the lobby, which was full of old Hollywood props- some furniture was from classic 1940s and 1950s movies. They would gather around the lobbys grand piano and sing, some would dance or enact scenes. One old Hollywood lifer would set up a bar and make us all fericously strong cocktails. The courtyard was crammed with statues and exotic plants, and residents would gather there by candlelight, huddle on the benches on long Summer nights and tell stories and anecdotes.
The roof was accessible then, and had palm leaf gazebos, paddling pools, and a Tiki bar. On a hot afternoon you could float in a cool pool and sip a margarita.
It was MAGICAL, and the new owners destroyed the place. As soon as they took over, they began forcing people out, they stripped the corridors of the art and threw it in the trash, they threw all the old prop furniture in skips, they chainsawed much of the courtyard vegetation, and they set about forcing the rest of the people out.
Once they had done so, they GUTTED the place, and turned it into the soul less shadow of its former glory that it is now.
Enjoy the Carlotta, maybe an echo of its magic may...

I am staying at the fully furnished, charming, unique and exclusive Villa Carlotta already for 2 month. It’s such an amazing luxury sophisticated experience!
Basically it’s a 5-star Boutique-Residence Hotel with all the amenities one can wish for ! The team, the delightful manager Brian and the lovely Vanessa who will help you with anything your heart is set on! And Tiarra who recently joined ! A dream team !
Villa Carlotta is an old Spanish colonial Hollywood landmark building from 1926, which was restored in a very chic Bohemian way and therefore didn’t loose its spirit and personality.
My room is a dream come true and I feel carried away into a fairytale world . It is very quiet here , I am looking at the famous Hollywood sign and onto the top of Palm-trees embracing the wonderful courtyard with the soothing sound of water flowing into the fountain .
My apartment is airy, fully furnished with a large kitchen, high ceilings, a King-size bed , a charming all white bathroom and plenty of wardrobe spaces and the building has a 24-hour concierge. And its dog friendly !
There is a gorgeous rooftop I can hang-out on, and a pool as well as the Hideaway Club House are in the making. And yet the fun and exciting little hipster hood of Franklin Village is right in front of me. It’s a true Hollywood experience one...
Read moreThis was my home in the late 90s. I knew I had made it when I was vouched for by tenants to rent an apt. Such a wonderful place.
I remember clearly when the big tree by the front door decided one very early morning to drop off, blocking Franklin completely, and smash a poor delivery truck just starting it’s work day. We all took pictures sitting on the branch that looked more like a tree due to length & girth. Pucs used to hang in the lobby.
I remember roof top grilling. I remember my going away party in the lobby and the group sing-a-long to All the Leaves Are Brown. I remember Eric Stoltz (all chill in his jaunty scarf & elbow patched corduroy blazer) knocking on my door my last day looking for the new tenant. I remember seeing the Stone Temple Pilots play a surprise show at the Dragonfly my last night. I remember listening to Under the Bridge as I drove through downtown’s mix master highway on my way out of town.
Viva La VC!! Old...
