The Ohio River is a major waterway and Louisville is a big city. As such, there are a bunch of different opportunities for crossing the river between Kentucky and Indiana. The Sherman Minton bridge is a little bit west of downtown and carries I-64 and US 150 between Louisville and New Albany. The bridge is a double-deck through arch bridge. With a total length of 2052 feet and 16 feet above the surface of the Ohio (during normal river flow), it was built in 1962. The bridge is named for former United States Senator and Supreme Court justice Sherman Minton, who was a native of New Albany. Three lanes northbound from Kentucky to Indiana on the upper deck and the same southbound on the lower deck. If there is a pedestrian lane, I didn't spot it. Sixty years old and it kind of shows. Many of the steel guiders appear rusted and while that in itself is not a sign of structural integrity, it definitely doesn't give a warm and fuzzy feeling. Though back in 2011, it was repaired at a cost of nearly $14m and it allegedly provided another 20 years on the bridge's lifespan.

I was stuck on the bridge for 2 hours. This is not an exaggeration. Bridge was a one way due to construction. Someone lost their wheel which caused everyone behind the vehicle to come to a complete stop. My children and I were forced to use the construction crews Porta potty in the bridge. Be prepared if you plan to cross this bridge.

The bridge does its job. I've been over it over a thousand times (literally). I meant to post this review a year or two ago and I guess I forgot, so here we go... To the people tired of traffic, bridges are designed to accommodate significant amounts of traffic. I hope people remember that and move on; after all, it's beyond our control. To the people tired of the latest construction, yes, it feels like forever. I get that the unexpected closures/reroutes can be stressful -- but we aren't the experts, and we don't know everything that's going on (and we don't always need to). Updates are on the Sherman Minton Renewal website. To the workers, if you can get it done sooner, please do. Thank you for your service. To the drivers, be safe and careful. To the readers on the Internet that are reading this, have...
