Heartbreaking Bait and Switch Sales process.

I went into the gallery a few weeks ago when in Maui to look for some art for my home that I am currently building. There I met their salesperson, Dana, who showed me around and ultimately led me to a photograph that I instantly fell in love with. She explained to me that it was new and that she had just put it out this week as she described the photo to me and my brother in law. Dana went in the back, came out a few minutes later with a sheet of paper and quoted me a price of $5,250 (for the 1 meter and ~$7k for the 1.5m) which I didn't want to spend without thinking it over, talking to my wife, and visualizing the right spot in my home for it to be hung. She also mentioned at this time that her sales director was currently at their location and would have access to additional incentives...

I came back the next day with my wife. Dana wasn't there but her sales director, Christopher Bennett was. He showed it to my wife and I, and took us through the 'light show' where it can be seen at different levels of light. All this did was further make us fall in love with this photo, but our child was cranky, and we had to get to dinner.

I came back the next morning ready to make the purchase. I come into the gallery where both Dana and Christopher were and asked to confirm the price since there were two sizes I was going back and forth on but decided that because of the ceiling height in the room I desired this in, we would go with the 1m (previously quoted at $5,250 just a couple of days prior).

To my absolute shock, Christopher told me that the cost of the photo would be $10,000! When I mentioned the price Dana had quoted me, he said sorry, she got it wrong, and that because of how sold out it was, it was in the $10k pricing tier. I found myself wondering how that could be if Dana told me it was brand new and that she had JUST put it out earlier that week. We talked over the pricing and 'newness' of the photo for at least 15 minutes during our initial meeting. She even mentioned that it would be several weeks before the price would change because it was still in its initial 10% of being sold out.

I asked if he would honor the price that was quoted and he said no, but would give me 15% off the $10k. This is frankly, a terrible way to do business, and we are completely heart broken as there was so many other pieces we felt could go well in our home, but because of this, won't ever be able to buy a Peter Lik photograph. I find it extremely hard to believe that they didn't knowingly try this disgusting sales tactic. As beautiful as their pieces may be, I would not recommend this gallery under any...

My wife and I just got home from a amazing week in Maui. While we were there we ventured off the resort to the town of Lahaina for dinner and drinks. We accidentally stumbled on the Peter Lik gallery but have always been fans of his work. We worked with Phillip and he was great. The manager also assisted. They were both very knowledgeable...but not too pushy. We decided to buy a nice piece and will always remember our Maui trip each time we enter our living room!

FYI shipping was free to the East Coast and we were told it should arrive in roughly 6 weeks.

EDIT We loved our Enchanted Jetty piece we bought from Phillip so much, we called him and bought Rogue...

Went in to check out the latest PL. Love his work! It would help if the staff were better trained at sales. I.e. 1.Maybe ask if we are already familiar with the artists work rather than assuming we are not and bore us with information we already know. Actually let us browse the pieces in silence so we can take in the beauty of it rather than ruining the moment with NON-STOP chatter. ( eh hem, cough ...Charlie!)
