When we arrived at Maui, we were completely unaware of the prospects of exploring an undersea shipwreck while in the comforts of a submarine.
Our son is a marine vessel fanatic, and researched the sunken boat, the history behind it and was fascinated with the fact that it was scuttled intentionally.
They are not kidding about the parking, give yourself a few extra minutes to find a spot to park. The check-in clerk provided great directions to the departure location on the pier. We had a brief discussion about how excited we were for our tour and to see the sunken ship before heading to pier.
Once we hit the pier, we did have to wait of a bit however the washrooms are nearby and there is a tented area with benches to relax while you wait.
Safety was an obvious priority, with a bit of humour tossed in the mix to keep things from getting stale. Sadly, on the way to the submarine while we were on the boat, we were informed that we were not going to be touring the shipwreck, which was a massive selling feature when we were selecting activities and tour.
The guide was excellent, and brought enough humour for all 40 passengers, he was great. The tour seem to focus around one reef area, and an old anchor from whaling times. It was honestly a little lack luster as we circled the same reef three times, looking at the same fish.
On the way back the pier, we were fortunate enough to see a mother humpback and her calf playing at the surface and the captain of the boat made a point of stopping to allow all the passengers to watch for a bit.
I think had the check-in clerk notified us that the shipwreck was not on the advertised agenda, we would have considered rescheduling for...
Read moreHow many people can say that they were able to take a ride on a real submarine and go down 130 feet below the ocean? The trip starts out in the beautiful Lahaina harbor where you board a boat that will take you out to the submarine. The trip out takes no more than 15 minutes. The boat is very comfortable. If you take a trip during the winter months, there is a good chance you will see whales on the way. Once you reach the submarine you get the opportunity to watch it surface, which is really cool. Once the previous group exits you get on board. The submarine is small and holds about 24 people, so expect to be in close quarters to others. You then dive down and cruise along a reef where you can see many types of fish, coral, and other things that live on the bottom. You may even see some scuba divers. Along the way you get to see an actual sunken ship! If you are lucky you may even see a shark or two like we did. After the sunken ship you are taken down to the bottom of the ocean where you sit on the sea floor at 130 feet. The group before us even saw whales! The sub surfaces and you get loaded back on the boat for the short trip back to the harbor. Prices were about $125 per person and children 12 and under can be free. It is well worth the money. Kids and adults alike will love it. If you have problems being in tight spaces, you may want to figure out if this Adventure is right for you. I have some issues with claustrophobia, but the submarine did not bother me because my mind was on trying to see everything I could out of the windows. There are plenty of windows for everyone to see and they make sure to position the sub so that everyone has a chance to...
Read moreMy husband and I got married in Hawaii and saw an ad for the Atlantis tour. We noticed that the reviews were really good, so decided to try it out during our honeymoon. We were really excited, among the first to show up. We were the first to board the ferry that takes you to the submarine. Everything was going well until it was time to board the submarine. The guide chose everyone else and had them board first, even though we were clearly standing right in front of him, let alone he knew we were among the first to show up and board the ferry. We purposely showed up early so that we could get a good seat, but were asked to board last. So, we ended up sitting at the end of the submarine which was a little uncomfortable to begin with due to the ladder that needed to be raised and lowered. During the tour, all that we really got to see was a bunch of corral and tiny little fish, and this is due to the fact that we sat at the very end of the submarine. We wanted seats near the front or middle so that we could see more, but that just did not happen. What really made us mad was the fact that a bigger family showed up really late, we were just about to take off, and this family was among the first to board the submarine, and got the seats that we wanted. Needless to say, the ferry ride was better than the submarine itself, which is pretty pathetic. We paid full price for these tickets, and this was a huge waste of money and time. We were highly disappointed, and felt ripped off, and would prefer to get our money back. If you are looking for something to do, go for the Luau or a helicopter tour, which is totally worth the money and you won't be...
