Monopolistic price gouging with poor service/internet. Cities that only allow this junk service provider to form proprietary conduits and do not allow all service providers to have access to public conduits are also at fault. Here is the reason why the cities are allowing this consumer abuse from Spectrum: From Google AI "Cities generally make money from Spectrum through franchise fees set as a percentage of the company's gross revenues from cable services, typically capped by federal law at a maximum of 5%. The actual amount received by a specific city depends entirely on that city's negotiated franchise agreement and the total revenue Spectrum generates within its jurisdiction."
Also from Google Gemini: "No, a Spectrum franchise agreement generally does not allow other cable internet providers to have access to that city. Franchise agreements are typically exclusive, granting a single company the right to build and operate a cable system within a specific area, effectively locking out competitors and preventing them from using city rights-of-way for infrastructure. This exclusivity is designed to avoid the cost and inefficiency of multiple companies building their own separate networks in the same area. "
So cities are as much as much to blame as Spectrum is for allowing this to occur.
The FCC has also allowed them to get away with this for almost a decade now. Their service goes down a few times a year or more and when you try to report it, they walk you through rote troubleshooting steps that focus on your (functional) equipment when they know the problem is with their service impacting multiple homes in the area. This allows them to hide the actual number of outages that take place monthly. These issues are most likely due to their jerry-rigged infrastructure which they charge a mint for each month. A lot that money goes toward paying their call center to spam you 3 times a week trying to get more money.
Edited to add that the automated response from the "owner" is a joke. It's not like myself and several others haven't contacted them before and been dealing with this monopoly for years. They have never improved or cared about overcharging their customers for shoddy service. Again, the cities who allow Spectrum to hoard all the internet business in the Rogue Valley are equally responsible by taking their cut of the money and looking...
Read moreIf I could rate the Medford Spectrum store customer service lower than 1 star, I would. On 9/7/22 we had a technician out to our home to replace outdated equipment that was no longer working. This technician, Casey, went above and beyond in updating old wiring and replacing equipment. He also found we were being charged for equipment we didn’t have. He suggested I visit the local office and get this resolved. Today, 9/8/22, I visited the Medford Spectrum office on Center Drive and spoke with an employee named Lisa. She was very defensive, rude, and condescending from the beginning of our conversation. She suggested our family had the missing equipment, and we would be charged $100 plus dollars for it if not returned. She also said only the current month’s charge for this phantom equipment could be reversed per company policy. She said in no uncertain terms that it was my responsibility as a customer to know if there was an error in the billing. Since I hadn’t brought the overcharge to anyones attention, the overcharge (added to my bill for years) was my problem. She spoke to me as if I were some sort of criminal in front of an office full of customers listening to the discussion. This encounter was embarrassing and demeaning. As a customer who has paid my bill on time and in full for 30 years, I didn’t deserve this treatment—no one does. Do better for your customers, Charter. Respectful communication and problem solving is not that...
Read moreHorrible cable internet service! I signed up for 1 GBPS cable internet. I was originally provided a Spectrum brand wifi 6E router and gigabit compatible modem.
Spectrum started charging a monthly rental fee to use their router. Because of this I bought my own tri-band gigabit Wifi 6E router for over $200.
My cable internet service speeds drop significantly around 8 PM everyday. This happened with the Spectrum provided router and still happens with my new higher end router.
I have tried power cycling, checking router settings, making sure a proper Ethernet cord is plugged in from router to modem, firmware is updated, router is appropriately placed and mounted high in living room away from windows and other interference. Nothing seems to fix the internet speed issues that I experience around 8 PM everyday (can’t play 1080p or 4k).
I have talked to neighbors and many people in Medford. They all experience the same issue.
When I call Spectrum customer service they want to blame my router. I told them the same thing happened with the Spectrum provided router and the router I have is made for a house over 3,000 square feet. The house I am in is 1,400 square feet.
If you insist on a technician coming out here and the technician cannot figure out the issue they will most likely blame the router as well and then charge a fee for showing up. If there was another internet provider in the area I would switch...
