Great shop. Great amp tech. Terrible guitar tech.
I have a lot of love for Walt’s. The experience they provide is like no other store I’ve been in. Their staff is friendly, their coffee is outstanding, and the quality of guitars, cars, and watches in their shop is unmatched.
Their amp tech, Diego, brought my Princeton Reverb back from the grave. He was communicative through the entire process, and loves to share his knowledge about electronics.
On the other hand, their guitar tech is terrible. A year ago, I set up my 1969 Fender Mustang myself and had the truss rod and action perfect. I just took it into Walt’s for a regular tune up. After working on the guitar, the tech called me and said the truss rod is tapped out and the action is really high. He asked if he could put 9 gauge strings on it out of concern for the neck. I was surprised to hear this, but maybe he straightened the neck and then tried to add some more bow but the truss rod just wouldn’t budge. It’s an old guitar. It happens.
After picking up the guitar, the tech suggested I buy a new neck for the guitar if I want it to be playable. Otherwise, it’s a “museum piece.” I took it home and he was right. It’s unplayable. The strings were a mile from the fret board. I hated it. It was so bad, I shelved the instrument for a few weeks until I decided to get a second opinion.
I took the guitar to The Guitar Nook in North Miami, and the shop owner set the guitar up himself. The truss rod was nowhere near tapped out, and he even shimmed the neck. Now, my Fender Mustang has never been better. It’s a dream to play.
I was hesitant to write this review because I do love Walt’s so much. I’ve been back to the shop many times to get a coffee and check out their new inventory. That said, I’d never take a guitar to get set up there again. If I had listened to their guitar tech, I would have spent $1,000 on a new neck just to make my Mustang playable again. All it took was a trip to The Guitar Nook and a decent tech who charged less than Walt’s did for an...

Read moreWas very much visiting this place due to its carrying super neat guitars, cars and watches. Was in Miami Beach for the weekend (in town from Detroit) and planned an evening in Wynwood solely to check this place out (and have dinner and drinks over there). Uber costs were ~$50 round trip so choosing to come over here was a premium.
Checked their website multiple times the week/day of our visit to confirm hours. Always said closed at 7PM (except Mondays when they are closed). Arrived at 6PM to a locked door. We knocked (maybe they keep their doors locked for security purposes?) and the door was answered by an incredibly rude gentlemen informing us "we're closed for an event; it's all over our website and socials." A quick check on my phone confirmed he was lying; it was not "all over their website and socials." It merely said there was an event at 8PM; no mention of early closing. So, wasted money and entire evening of a hard earned vacation because they can't manage the most basics aspects of a business.
Sent them an email the next day with no response.
There is no denying they have a cool niche and combination of products. I would absolutely pop in if I'e ever in the area just to admire the old cars & guitars but would not give them $1 of my money knowing what they think of their customers. There are TONS of guitar shops around the country that treat their customers with respect and I encourage everyone to be prudent about from whom they buy and ensure it goes to businesses that value their time and hard...
