I am currently very happily enrolled as a Yoga Therapy student at Aum Home Shala. I did a tremendous amount of research before picking this school. Here are the main points upon which I made my decision:
Accreditation - many schools offering Yoga Therapy training are not actually accredited with the International Association of a Yoga Therapists (IAYT). This is because the IAYT have raised their standards and many schools no longer qualify. Aum Home Shala does.
Brick and Mortar location - some schools are 'location independent' which sounds rather cool, but unfortunately this means that the schedule is reliant on using other yoga studios to host their classes. Aum Home Shala have their own very lovely location so you know exactly where you need to be and when.
Linage - Melinda Atkins has studied at Kripalu and Loyola Marymount University. In my opinion these are both very well respected schools and their reputation contributes to the good reputation of Aum Home Shala.
Faculty - the faculty at Aum Home Shala is really amazing. All the teachers have amazing bios and histories which are well documented and easily accessible for anyone to google.
Schedule - all the classes are held over various weekends - roughly 1 per month. This makes it a very sustainable schedule for a busy individual such as myself who has a family and responsibilities of employment. Other schools teach in 10 day to 2 week modules which was not something I could commit to.
Location - although Aum Home Shala is a 5 hour drive for me it is the only accredited school in the South Eastern United States so it is very much closer than any other school.
Responsiveness - during the course of my research I called and emailed dozens of schools and spent many hours navigating their websites. Melinda was the only person who actually answered her phone. She responded to my very lengthy email, answering all my questions, and the Aum Home Shala website is clear and easy to understand.
Getting your needs met - I've given a lot of concrete and tangible information regarding why I chose Om Home Shala for my Yoga Therapy training. However, there is something else I wanted to add. As I have journeyed into yoga I have become more conscious. Aware of my body, my emotions, my intuition. When I first decided to become a Yoga Therapist I was determined to take my training with a Celebrity Yoga Teacher. Soon after inquiring there I started to realize that the woman in question and her school were unable to meet my most basic needs, ie simple inquiries. I wanted to ignore this feeling, so strong was my desire to train with her. Fortunately I listened to my gut and when I contacted Melinda Atkins the difference was night and day, and I realized what it was to be 'seen'.
This was what sealed the deal for me, and since enrolling it has only...
Read moreHave been receiving yoga therapy care at "The Shala" over the past several months. Lori and Melinda put together a program for my specific situation (iatrogenic nerve damage secondary to surgery) and have been carefully adapting it as we move forward. Lori has led my yoga therapy sessions with attention, focus, support and great eye for detail. They continually receive feedback from me and monitor my progress to help inform any necessary changes. The results have been amazing. My mobility and strength have slowly but surely improved, I’m much more aware of my body and how it works, and the pain/tightness that I was experiencing have slowly subsided. As an added bonus, I have been feeling energized after my yoga therapy sessions without fail! Yoga therapy at The Shala (AUM hOMe Shala) has been a godsend for my recovery. I am very grateful to Melinda, Lori and the crew for helping me along this tough part...
Read moreHi there! If your reading this review then you have experienced or been told about the power of yoga. I am a student in the YTT Training Summer 2014 program and I have gained alot of insight about myself as well as how to share the gift of yoga. In addition, I participate in the Yoga Therapy Classes on Saturday due to a chronic ankle sprain and low arches. I have gained knowledge in how to develop my yoga practice to my desired level through taking safe measures and the yoga therapy has helped me understand my body better. As an athlete, knowing your bodies' limits is one of the most challenging things to learn and I hope to continue therapy to strengthen my ankles to prevent future injuries in the future. Please check out how you can experience yoga as well as participate in one of the yoga workshops through the school's...
