The facility is ok, but the staff have been very frustrating to deal with and very disappointing. I arrived with a bunch of children, and I intended to purchase a punch pass to use on all of them. I found out upon arrival that punch passes are not transferable, thus I couldn't share it with the children. This was not made clear on the website, and it was not how they worked at other gyms I've been to, and it threw a wrench into my plans, but under a great deal of pressure from the children to start climbing, I still purchased one punch pass for myself.
Then, one year later, I discovered that the punch passes are only good for one year. yet ANOTHER characteristic of punch passes that was different from other gyms I've been to and again, it was not made clear on their website, nor was it explained to me by the staff at the time of purchase. Instead, I was expected to read the fine print of a form to know that, at a time I was filling out a ton of waivers and forms already under pressure to get a bunch of kids climbing. This feels extremely deceptive to omit this critical information from the website and to not have it verbally communicated by the staff at the time of purchase. Yes, I should have read it, but I had so much else to read, and regardless, they had many ways of communicating this clearly and chose not to, hoping to cheat me out of money. It worked.
I got a call from the manager, Devan, which I thought was nice of them to call me back, but then his comments basically amounted to "Too bad. You lost." I asked if there was anything he could do, and he said no. I informed him I would be taking my business to Inner Peaks in Charlotte. He said he was sorry to hear that, but I don't think he was. Just a little bit of a concession would have made all the difference. One day pass, or an added month to my punch pass to get a few more climbs in. Anything would have been seen as a nice gesture and acknowledgement that the terms should have been made more clear to me. But nothing. He was glad that their scam worked and he stole my money, so he doesn't care.
Just checked the website again. It still says: Punch Pass
8 punch: $120
Includes shoes and harness
Just a little text there saying "Non-transferable, expires after 1 year" would allow people to make a plan and be prepared before arrival, but they choose not to add that so they can trick people into spending money they can't use. Don't let them...
Read moreTerrible, terrible, awful awful bouldering, do not go here for bouldering, this place is for kids, families, after school kids events, if you have kids, yeah maybe fine, but it's all belay basically, the bouldering routes are the worst I've ever seen.
No different styles, terrible grading, confusing grading, missing start flags, confusing flags, if it's a v5-v6 its just crimps and no grip, that's the only thing, and the v3-v4 is mad easy, no gradient between the routes in terms of difficulty.
No dyno, no slab, just crimp city baby. Have you been doing the fingerboard? No? That's all this place caters towards, I honestly believe they are purposely making the bouldering bad, confusing and overly crowded on the wall on purpose.
They must not want people on those sections, belay and kids events seems the focus.
Probably cool for parents. Not cool for climbers.
So many climbs on the wall you will be slamming your knee, ankle, elbow into 8 different colored routes on your way up.
The pads are awful, they have holes where you go straight to the concrete, they have reviews saying this same thing more than 3 years ago.
Just go to InnerPeaks in Charlotte, any of the three wonderful locations, they have far superior route setting, nicer staff, etc.
Also there was NOBODY there, nobody wants to climb here man.
I will never come back, it's obvious they are not interested in bouldering.
There is no beta for any of these routes, just a grip strength check.
No techniques, just go fingerboard more.
I left not even tired after like 3 hours there, most routes are either not tagged, mistagged, undertagged, maybe half the route got taken down so you are just confused.
Place is a whole mess. Unbelievable. Oh my god why is there so many holds on every square inch of the wall, you cannot get your hips close to wall because there's 10 different colors of routes in your way.
This place is probably for kids and maybe belayers. Felt scammed and a huge waste of time. By the way, please stop playing Evanescence and Stone Cold Sour or whatever from the early 2000s, that music is only good in rotation not blasted the entire time. Terrible music choice, at that point for real just...
Read moreThe gym is 5 years old, but feels almost brand new. Auto belays with easy routes and 4 routes 5.9-5.11+ for your warm ups. The top rope/lead walls are very nice with good rope, there is plenty to keep you busy and still not climb all the routes. Plenty in the 5.10-5.12 range. The lead only wall looked great, with a respectable overhang. I did not climb on the lead wall. There is no slab on top rope or lead. The bouldering area does have slab. The bouldering area seemed limited, with a lower quality of route setting than at other gyms, but still very good. The pads in the bouldering area are very firm, possibly dangerously so. Also the pads are not in good condition. It was unclear which boulders you could top out and which ones you had to jump down from. The grading system on bouldering is very confusing. These were the only big things that stuck out to me. In general the holds are modern but of two types - some very grippy and some not as grippy, and these are actually a little easier on the skin, albeit a little slippery and more technical. None of the walls in the entire gym have texture, they are very smooth, not my favorite, but definitely interesting for a change and challenging. More like outdoor. There is a climbing area outdoors on a terrace with top rope and an auto belay, but I didn't not go there. Looks about 35 foot walls. A very cool feature of this gym. The route setting was either good or bad, overall I felt this was a mild weakness. Route setting 7/10. The staff was exceptionally friendly. There are sparkling clean bathrooms and showers, and the plethora of other facilities I did not have time to utilize. Rental harnesses not great, but they have Petzl Grigri for rent. I quickly found a buddy for top rope, but when he left a staff member gave me a belay, and I really appreciate that. Both nights I went there were less than 15 people in the gym. Overall gym rating nationwide 7/10. Will...
