Alex Kantor Hair — Local services in New York

TLDR: Alex is very communicative, VERY skilled, and very willing to listen to you. I would absolutely recommend booking an appointment.

Here's my rant (positive): My hair has been a big part of my identity since I moved away from my less-than-tolerant hometown. I have explored a few hairstyles on my own as I started to try to figure myself out in NYC, and until I started with Alex, I was content to just let my hair grow out as long as possible. I loved my long hair, but I finally took the plunge to book with Alex and get an actual hair STYLE. I explained my worries, wants, and needs to Alex and boy, did she provide! On that first appointment, she checked in with me frequently to ensure I was ok (we were cutting something like 6-8 inches off) and I walked away feeling SO GREAT about how I looked. This person gave me a style that is so ME that my friends have even mentioned they can't picture me with hair down to my lower back anymore. I know I'm laying it on thick, but I really am so grateful for Alex's help...

I went to Alex at the beginning of last year looking for a gender affirming cut. I came in with a lot of anxiety, a lot of information about myself and my gender, and a lot of concerns. She heard me out, asked me questions, calmed my anxiety, and collaborated with me on the exact cut that I wanted. Checking in throughout the cut to make sure it is exactly what I wanted and providing context for each step of the haircut if I asked for it. After a year of being a client I can firmly say that I love every cut Alex has given me and I happily recommend her to anyone wanting a haircut. Throughout this Alex has also helped push me along in my gender journey and helped me accept where I am at and who I am. She provides such a low pressure, calm experience - any cut that I thought was too out of the box was just another day for her which helped quell anxiety around gender presentation. Alex is incredibly knowledgeable in her craft and considerate of each individuals needs....

Alex is not only incredibly talented as a hairstylist, but she is also warm, patient, and kind! It takes a lot to put me at ease in many situations, including during haircuts, and she does. She gave me my favorite haircut of all time yesterday, and I was her last appointment of what was surely a busy day. I followed her to a new space, and I look forward to having a shorter commute to this spot so that I don't wait for my hair to get ridiculous before coming back. Even after I looked at everything in the mirror, Alex took the time to recommend some styling solutions that are quick and easy, and, after styling my hair, made a couple of additional cut adjustments that she caught.
