I went to Angel Hands Wellness for my first massage in two years, because I've been having a lot of pain in my shoulders and wanted to treat myself for my birthday - while also not breaking the bank. Based on reviews and their pricing menu, I was really looking forward to the experience. I showed up (with an appointment) and they didn't have any sort of check in process - I'm not really sure what the point of making an appointment is, they never asked my name and asked all of the questions I had already filled out online. They also didn't have any health or waiver forms to fill out, which I've never experienced anywhere else I've received a massage and kind of feels concerning for everyone involved.
But I looked over that, thinking maybe it's just that I'm not originally from NYC and don't know how it works here. As the massage went on, however, I realized there's a reason it's so cheap. The massage went back and forth between feeling good to being really bad. And by bad, I mean sometimes very painful and sometimes nothing at all. I couldn't tell at times if the masseuse was good at her job and making mistakes, or bad at her job and accidentally doing things right on occasion. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to put your elbow directly into someone's spine, for example, but at other times she located the crazy knots in my shoulder blade and it felt incredible.
I left after my hour and was really dizzy for about 15 minutes which was really unsettling. But eventually I felt fine, and went about my day. As the day went on, though, my back started hurting really badly, worse than when I went in. I thought that this would be much more temporary than it was, because of the pressure and because I hadn't received a massage in awhile. But I had very weird bruises on my back from her elbow - and my back / neck are still in pain (it has been a week).
It was not the worst massage I've ever gotten, but it was pretty close. I guess you get what you pay for in this city, and I will make sure to go to an establishment in the future where the staff are clearly trained on human anatomy and...
Read moreI had an extremely disappointing and painful experience at Angel Hands Wellness Spa. I was looking forward to a relaxing massage, but what I received was anything but. From the start, my masseuse applied an excessive amount of pressure, digging into my back and neck so intensely that I was in immediate discomfort. I repeatedly tried to communicate that the pressure was too much, but due to a clear language barrier, I don’t believe she understood me. Unfortunately, she continued with the same level of force, and the pain became unbearable.
I ultimately had to stop the massage early because I couldn’t take it anymore. When I sat up, I felt extremely dizzy and lightheaded, to the point where I had to lie back down for a moment just to regain my composure. Now, four days later, I am still experiencing significant pain, especially in my neck and upper back. If this discomfort doesn’t subside soon, I may need to visit an urgent care clinic to make sure I haven’t sustained a serious injury.
While I understand that this spa offers lower-priced services, the quality of care and the lack of communication make it completely not worth it. A massage should leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, not in worse condition than when you arrived. I rarely leave reviews, but this experience was so bad that I feel obligated to warn others. If you’re considering getting a massage here, I highly recommend looking elsewhere for a place that prioritizes customer...
Read moreI have been to this lovely little massage spot a few times now. Note that there is one a few doors down, so make sure you’re going to the right one! I came here last around 10pm on a Wednesday evening. I called beforehand to make sure they had time for a 1-hour massage, and they did. The gentleman who answers phones and takes the money is very pleasant. Soft spoken and accommodating, he handed me a small cup of water right away upon arrival. It was a hot night. He leads me into the partitioned room with the cold AC. I have to say that NYC is one of the few places on earth where you can get a quality massage at 10pm on a weeknight and was I grateful for this! I ask for a female masseuse and the gentleman says they only have females - cool! The bed is lined with the usual paper underneath and the towel I used to cover myself is clean (this is unfortunately not always the case at other places). The lady masseuse comes in and we make friendly greetings in Chinese. She is so strong and I love it. She tells me she has done 3 one-hour massages in a row and I am her 4th. For the amount of strength it takes to work on my back, I was very impressed at her endurance. Needless to say, I had a wonderful hour of massage and left feeling...
