I wish everyone the pleasure of tasting some of the beautiful and delicious sweet treats from NYC chocolatier – Chocolat Moderne – and I’d be proud to recommend a visit and purchase to all self-proclaimed chocolate lovers and would-be thoughtful gift-seekers who may happen upon this review!
Meeting Joan and Jim in their “factory/storefront” and exchanging pleasantries while learning about their wonderful creative flavors and spirited inspirations only added to the confection affection baking inside of my mind’s oven (quadruple pun not intended).
I purchased an assortment of their bars and bonbons as gifts to bring my transplanted NYC friends (who now live in another big city) as a taste of home and an homage to their eclectic tastes and styles. While I tend to agree that almost all chocolate is good, not all are great, and certainly not all are beautiful. These are great, beautiful, in somewhat limited supply, and come in enough flavors that there’s certainly a few you have yet to experience.
Needless to say (based on my deserved 5 star review), the gifts were well-received (and not long-lived) and I have found new inspiration to inject into my own hobby of pastry creation, along with an 85% cacao that is exactly my idea of how extra-dark chocolate should be done.
So that’s it, I’ve put it out there. I don’t like sharing my opinions, but this chocolate is great, and while nothing in New York City is necessarily “fairly-priced,” the flavors, attention-to-detail, and customer service from the founders made this gift/personal purchase seem like a great value and has solidified its designation as my new secret spot to make not-so-secret via this Google review.
P.S. Please let me cut in line if you’re going to stand in one before any holidays where they probably have to hand out numbers and possibly sell out of certain flavors, or altogether. Much...
Read moreThis place is incredible! It's in a wholesale space where they actually make all the chocolate bars and truffles on site, so it's not your usual brick and mortar shop. But once you are inside, you can see all the equipment and all their truffles and bars on display. When I came in, the two owners were there and very friendly, and they were so generous with samples (I even got a whole truffle, the hazelnut!) and telling me about what they were inspired by and their unique and cute names for each truffle. I had the hazelnut truffle there, which was incredible, as well as a few of the dark, milk, white, and blonde chocolates -- all were delicious. When I came home tonight, we had the The Lover bar, which is white chocolate, caramel, passion fruit with cardamom, and it was just as delicious as it sounds -- filled with passion fruit on the inside, and the chocolate was really creamy and decadent. It doesn't help that the truffles are so pretty because then I have the dilemma of whether I should eat them or just continue staring at them. I'd highly recommend this place when you'd like to splurge on high quality chocolate -- all made...
Read moreWhen everyone in your family is devoted to finding the most delicious chocolates, you take extra care to seek out the special places so this weekend for my husband's birthday, we went to Chocolat Moderne. There's no fancy storefront announcing its existence and you ride up to the 9th floor in what looks like regular building questioning if maybe you're not in the right place. As soon as you come off the elevator and open the door to their space, you realize you have entered what will probably be your new favorite place in NYC. The space is their kitchen and also their showroom and they spent time finding out what our favorites might be. Talking flavor combinations and nuances it was amazing to be in the presence of humble experts looking to match us with a box of transformative bites. After a bit, the small space filled up with people waiting to talk and put together boxes for special occasion but just being there was an occasion in itself for us. Every bite is beyond and we will see them...
