First things first when you move into a new neighborhood: raid the local bookstore.
This has always been my mantra. And Community Bookstore had been on my hit list when I first spotted it while apartment hunting. It has a great selection of recent releases and contemporary fiction which is where I spend most of my time browsing. If you can't find what you're looking for, you can place orders for pick up and even get books delivered. They also have some pretty awesome author events that you can sign up for on the website (many are free!).
I was pleasantly surprised to discover at checkout that they have a rewards program, so if you buy enough books you can get a 10% discount.

Read moreAn excellent independent neighbourhood bookstore. They have a nice loyalty program and have an excellent selection of new releases. They're more focused on literature, current affairs and history than other areas, and aren't as big as some of the other Brooklyn independents, but I'm very happy with it as my neighbourhood bookstore.

Truly holds a special place in the neighborhood and my son's preschool is welcomed to visit here during the week. 2 stars for my experience with service. Three times I've checked out with cold customer service and each time the staff were talking to each other behind the counter with no attention to their paying customers.
