I joined Crunch Gym around towards the ending of January at the South Slope location. At first I was hesitant, because I didn't want to feel like another statistic of the new years resolution group.
Since I have been on my weightloss journey even before the new year, I needed to get that extra boost in what I have already lost. So I figured, sure why not join. And I'm glad I did.
So the sales rep named Anthony was super nice, and not only that, he was patient as well. He actually wasn't trying to sell me the membership, but rather was genuine thoughtful of my needs and wants. He asked me what my goals were, and broke it down for me.
Anthony gave me a tour of the facility showed me the equipment and tons of free weights. The facility is very clean! And it's in a nice and safe neighborhood too. The staff is also very laid back and chill.
I asked Anthony about cardio and possible trainers, he showed me the cardio machines (which there are a decent amount actually) not something I expected because being a former member at PF their stuff is trash.
The crunch at South Slope has 3 floors, the middle floor being the entrance area, then down stairs is where the locker rooms are and even an area to workout in front of a large mirror. Upstairs is where the fitness equipment is located.
Honestly if it wasn't for Anthony showing me the facility but more importantly asking me directly what my goals are and what is it that I truly wanted to accomplish for my mind and my body, I don't think I would have joined. Since I started getting back on my fitness journey, no one (including myself) has ever asked me that question directly. Sure we say we want to do this or that etc. But realistically most people fail because they're not being realistic.
And I think I'm on the right track, since joining I've already lost 12lbs. Was there yesterday and even saw Anthony.
I feel if you're wanting to join a gym for the long term, this is it. The staff is friendly and receptive to your needs, the location is at a nice and safe neighborhood and its clean. And they even check your temperature and make sure everyone is social distancing, and wearing mask for added protection against Covid. They're doing the right thing.
I make the trip every Saturday from where I live in Harlem, just to go to that location. Because I like it there.
So thanks to crunch gym and the staff, and Anthony for being a part of my fitness and weightloss journey....
Read moreI love this gym, it's making me into a middle aged gym rat! Christian, the manager, is the loveliest person and he runs a tight ship. The staff members are all just so kind and welcoming and helpful and it's probably the cleanest gym I've been to. The classes are amazing and wide-ranging (shout out to Lenoa, she teaches Burn and Firm and she's incredibly motivating, entertaining, playful and vivacious and the class is really challenging yet accessible).
It's not the biggest Signature Crunch and they don't have a dedicated spin classroom (though this accounts for the cheaper membership fee than at some other Signature Crunches), but the vibe is awesome and the layout is much more streamlined than at some of the other signature branches. I've tried a bunch of gyms in the area over the years (all three of the closest YMCAs, Equinox in Brooklyn Heights, Harbor, even Planet Fitness) and this hits such a sweet-spot compared to any of the other gyms (and is in the middle price-wise). As stated, the classes are incredible (as good as at some very fancy studios), staff friendly, amenities pretty sweet , there's almost never a broken machine and a nice variety of them, it's clean, there's a lot of natural light in the cardio and weight lifting rooms, and the members of this gym are also usually very easy-going.
I also love the sweatshed/HIIT workout area! I had taken a two year break from exercise after a very serious car accident and getting fit again in such an inviting space surrounded by lovely people is really moving to me. I'm just extremely impressed.
Update: Just bought a three-pack of training sessions and took my first with Tyree. He was amazing! he met me where I was, was extremely motivating and knowledgable (who knew I was deadlifting all wrong, formally putting tremendous strain on my lower back I feel so much better with his adjustments), asked what my priorities were and tailored the session beautifully to fulfill them... I couldn't be more impressed! I missed our first appt (an emergency with my ailing mom), wrote him to say just deduct the session, I'm so sorry, and this lovely human being tells me in person he is absolutely giving me that third session. I always feel so cared for at this weirdly...
Read moreHave been a member here for a bit. Unremarkable gym that has enough equipment to get the job done. But, if you ever need assistance from a manager or need to cancel your membership—forget it. Only the operations manager can cancel your membership or refund you for an erroneous charge, but he only works at this location 1-2 days a week. You can try to email him, but he seems to not get back to anyone—I’ve sent five emails and no response. No one else that works at the location can help. So, you are truly out of luck if you need anything corrected with your account. Steer clear unless you are ok with a lack of communication and customer service.
UPDATE: Crunch responded to this review with an email address to contact to get this issue resolved. It appears they did that solely for optics because I have emailed twice over the past week and gotten no response again. Additionally have followed up with their operations manager multiple times with no response—but they did manage to charge me again. My husband has also emailed to cancel his membership and gotten no response in a month. It’s very clear Crunch is responding to this review to look as if they have strong customer service—but do...
