Rare Full English Done (Almost) Right

It’s almost impossible to find a proper Full English breakfast in Brooklyn anymore. But Black Horse Pub doesn’t just attempt it — they nearly nail it.

I sat outside at a packed pub on a rainy day. The staff immediately wiped down the table and helped me connect to Wi-Fi — even typing the password in for me when I had trouble. That kind of service is unheard of these days.

The wings were excellent — perfectly cooked, with a sweet-spicy sauce that didn’t overload on sugar. Drinks (Magners and a whiskey shot) arrived quickly, even during a full house.

Now, the Full English. Eggs: perfect. Mushrooms: deeply flavorful. Black pudding: absolutely nailed it — earthy, balanced, rustic in the best way. Tomatoes and beans tied it all together into that rare kind of rich, savory balance that only a proper English breakfast can deliver. Only misstep? The sausage. Not a real British banger — more like a basic breakfast link. It knocks it down a bit. But honestly, in a borough where this dish barely exists, the effort and flavor still make it worth a strong 4.5 stars.

Would absolutely come back. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a little UK comfort...

I wanted to withhold judgment on Black Horse until I visited several times. Now that I have, I think four stars is a fair rating (rather than the three that seem appropriate at first glance) for a few reasons...

Rotating beer list includes local breweries - I was a little upset that the first times I went there was nothing from Brooklyn Brewery or Six Point. Now there is, and life is better. While I would not recommend this place to beer aficionados, they do a pretty good job at getting some good beer in there.

Food - My biggest problem is that I don't really like the chips. They're sort of bland and usually underdone. However the bangers and mash are decent. And I've also noticed that the food (as well as the vibe) is pretty authentic to England. You don't go into a pub in England and expect great food, you expect sort of greasy pub food, which is what they have here.

Also worth noting, the owners are very cool and look out for their patrons. The music is good, and it is deceptively large. Even when the place gets kind of crowded, it doesn't feel...

Normally good place to eat good food I waited a good 40 minutes for my food there was only one server they had about 35 people in the place my friend and I ordered these exact same meal my portion was smaller than his They need to hire more people to handle the crowd some of us only have a half hour to an hour to eat so therefore it’s very inconvenient so will have to go to a different place that serves us faster also when using a credit card they charge a premium I’m spending my money in your restaurant why do I have to pay the premium that you should pay when I’m spending my money You’re using the credit card company for your convenience why are you passing on what you have to pay to the customer does loyal to you I think...

This kitchen is on fire and in a very good way... been coming here for a few years since it opened FOR THE FOOD. Unheard of in bars, at least in my experience. The signature Black Horse Burger (medium) is one of the most juicest and tastiest I've tried in New York and i live here over 30 years...also recommend the Shrimp Salad. A homerun place, oh and it being a pub, has great selection of draft beer and outdoor seating when weather permits.. a little loud at times(understandably being a sports bar) but well worth it...

This is a local Brooklyn pub with decent draft beer selections, good cocktails, great service, and bar food. I had the Monster Nachos with buffalo chicken. It was one of the best nachos I had, mainly because it has the right chips to toppings ratio. Some nachos come with a lot of chips and not enough toppings! This is not one of them! My only complaint is that it was too big! If you are not sharing it, just opt out for the smaller size and enjoy...
