District 87 Salon — Local services in New York

(Thursday, 8/19/21) Finally was able to visit this salon! First off, it’s a beautiful space- it’s so clean, open and very spacious. It’s very modern & everyone is so friendly and accommodating. My mom & I have had our hair done with Sofiya back in 2018-19 when they still had Bianchi salon. It had been a while, so it was nice to see her again! My mom had a half-head balayage with Sofiya and I had an in between half/full head balayage with Sonia.

In Feb 2020 pre-covid, we each had our balayage at another salon we tried nearby us and both my mom’s and my hair became dry. The ends were especially more dried out from over-bleaching & the products they used. Mine was more dried out because they had to re-do mine because the color was way too light. By this time, the color has faded a bit/toned down so it was time for something new!

I was glad to come here and have Sonia work her magic to fix/add some fresh color and dimension to my hair after a long while. My appointment ended up being changed to an hour later, but it was totally understandable; Sonia was so nice and apologetic about it and both she & Cathy notified me beforehand. So I had time to chat & watch Sofiya get started with my mom’s hair.

Sonia was so sweet to talk to- she took a look at some pics of what I was going for and took the time to assess my hair and discuss ideas, which I liked! We decided on a bit subtle chocolate color but with light enough areas & face framing to still be noticeable. At first, I thought it turned out a little too subtle, but then as they blow dried and styled my hair at the end, I could see the color start to pop especially in natural lighting and it was what I was looking for! Diego was very good at styling my hair and I appreciated the time he took to do so.

My mom was going for a warmer tone from her previous color. Sofiya was the one who suggested she could achieve the results with even a half-head balayage& she was right! The perfect amount of color was there and we both loved how it turned out- it really brightens when in the natural sunlight. Sofiya took the time to style her hair too and in the end, came out so beautiful! We love how our hair feels after they style our hair. It’s a such a contrast to our experience at the previous salon we went to. I think it’s the quality of the products they use plus the care they take with each client’s hair.

I had a horrible experience as a hair model for an instructor who was teaching a student. I have a rash on my back because she instructed her student to cut against the skin, not use a cape. There was no barbasol or sterilization of her tools, so she gave me an infection. Aside from that health issue, the teacher was completely incompetent. Insufficient consultation - didn’t ask me how I style my hair or my routine. Talked me out of my desired style. No point cutting - everything was cut straight across, which is insane, because my hair is thick, and you can absolutely see every chunky cut. No cape to keep the hair off me. Didn’t wash my hair. Layers not blended. Bangs completely disconnected from the haircut - not even an attempt to blend them. No sectioning or precision when making the bangs - she just grabbed a random chunk of hair and cut straight across! No sectioning to cut face frame. It appeared she just eyeballed everything - there was no precision or technique. I have Heavy, thick ends and random layers that do nothing to shape the cut. Bangs split in the middle. No cross-checking to make sure it’s even. Right side longer than the left side. I look like a 5 year old kid who found scissors and wanted to try out bangs. I told the teacher I hated the bangs. She blamed a cowlick. Blamed me for agreeing to get bangs. I showed her a picture of me with good bangs, so it’s certainly possible if executed correctly!. Refused to fix the bangs because it would “ruin the haircut.” Gaslit me and told me it looked great. I could see people giving each other looks, as if this happens a lot with this woman’s clients. And her next client was a man who had come back to get his haircut fixed! He hated what she did, but she just kept insisting to her student, “it’s fine, it’s not bad.” And she was rude to her student. Called them mediocre. Instructor Kept saying to me, “What were you expecting, this is a class, they’re a student!” - the instructor did 75% of the haircut, so don’t blame your student! Also there were 3 dogs there, and the sink was dirty (in the bowl was a used towel with bleach on it) when they wet my hair & conditioned it. I just was expecting a nicer experience. Usually students are slow, which is the trade off for being a model - it takes longer, but the teacher usually ensures it’s good work. What a bummer. Now I’m in...

I really cannot 😂 please just Look at the photos of my hair. Chi replies clearly with lies! My hair was fabulous and I never complained about my previous highlights that is a major lie! I actually LOVED how my highlights came out before chi touched my hair. I did them with SANDRA downtown. She is amazing and always nails my highlights unfortunately she had no time to do my highlights that day. Please do not lie guys… that is absurd! And THANK GOD I didn’t sign that waiver’ guys don’t do it! Or else they will not give you your money back! Or try to fix it their mess. As you all can see my hair is dried and styled in those pictures and looks hideous! And the color is awful and so are the highlights. Now you know never cheat on your hairstylist or else your hair will come out like mine..no other hair salon has EVER required me to sign a waiver. Don’t do it guys!!!!!!!!!

I wasn’t going to post a review because he gave me a refund but the more I look at my hair the more angry I get. I let my hair grow out for months before wanting to get highlights again and I decided to go to chi tang because he was on my neon coat (an app for models where you get a discount). I come in and show him pictures of what I wanted done! I wanted the highlights from my scalp and I wanted a beautiful bright buttery blonde. He told me that he’s an expert at this….. He’s not. My hair is completely RUINED and the color is AWFUL. I look brunette again with caramel highlights. Don’t be fooled by the pictures he takes on his Instagram because it’s all lighting and definitely editing. I hate to do this but not only is my hair terrible but also burnt off. I could see the fumes as he’s blow drying my hair. A piece of my bangs actually came off. I’m so upset as you know our hair is very important to us. And now I’m afraid to even highlight my hair again because of the damage. I’ll add some pictures so you all can see.. do not be fooled by these reviews honestly. I hate to do this but this was crazy. And his assistant also does not know how to do hair. She completely ruined my highlights. Also I arrived at 4 and didn’t leave till 9…….
