At the checkout counter, the female cashier yelled at us while we were waiting to check out. We stood behind a woman who was completing her checkout, so I placed my two bottles of water on the counter since it was very cold. The casher (a black lady) rolled her eyes and barked: "Step back !!" I simply stated: "I just placed my water on the counter. They are too cold to be held. " She then barked again: NO, stand back ! So I stepped back although the customer before us was leaving. In less than 30 seconds, the cashier exchanged eyes with the security and acted as if she was facing security issues from us. The security guy (a black young man) then started yelling at us as well. Now, the cashier was so empowered and joined the yelling again.
This is simply a racist act given that both the cashier and the security guy are black. They are rude from the beginning without proper cause. Let's face ut, they dare to openly treat us poorly simply because we are Asian. She was so sweet and smiling toward the white lady before us yet changed her mood to impatient and angry facial expressions immediately when looking at us as if we dis not belong there. Shame on these two staff of DR. Shame on your store staff performamce standard.
Talking about being racists, the cashier and the security guard are good examples of being discriminative and abusive. DUANE needS people to be educated well so they can treat others with dignity regardless of their race.

   Read moreThis store is large and spacious, but it is rather chaotically organized, untidy, with many items (including convenience items) poorly stocked. The employees and security staff are very pleasant and helpful, despite the store's location and heightened security practices.
Also, as this location is in the Port Authority Bus Terminal, it appears to be taking extreme steps against theft. Many aisles have a majority, if not almost all, of the products locked behind plastic shields. I recognize the store's intentions here, but I would not go to this location to buy anything but convenience items, since it seems like most of the typical drug store stock is physically secured. It's too much of an inconveniece to have to find and wait for an employee to unlock each selection.
The cashier also informed me that it is very common for credit card fraud alerts to be triggered by attempted purchases at this particular location. That's what happened to me!
There is another Duane Reade about a block further north, and it is better maintained, better staffed, better stocked, and all around nicer. That store has selections of more higher-end products, while still carrying the basic items one expects. Best of all, only a relatively small number of items, the âusual suspectsâ have locked, physical anti-theft barriers. It's worth the walk down the block for an all-around better experience, even if you're waiting for a bus.

   Read moreI understand that working in a high volume store can be trying. I also understand things happen, but the customer service at this location stinks. I tried to print some pictures at this location using the online application, big mistake. When I got there first someone told me the girl who worked in that area was not there yet, then a lady came over like she was going to print the photos, but ended up not doing it. After all this the Manager said the server was down. Really?! I asked if they could transfer the order to another store, he said I had to do it from my phone. I was in a hurry so I just asked for a refund of the money I paid online. Nope, he couldn't do that either. Basically, he could do nothing including trying to reboot the server. Just plain incompetence. Do not print photos at this location. The only silver lining is that corporate ( yes I had to call corporate) says my card will not be charged if the location does not print the photos.
