I moved nearby recently and was excited to have a nice grocery store so close- it seemed well stocked, with a good selection and deli. Last week I bought a container of blue cheese. When I opened it up, there was no plastic sealing inside, which seemed strange, and it looked pretty old and dry without the usual strong smell. When I looked closer, I saw it was actually covered in a white/grayish fuzzy mold, which is a sign the cheese has gone bad. I took it back to the store, and the cashier refunded it without issue. I went and did a quick shop and found a different blue cheese that was sealed and seemed much fresher; when I went to checkout with a different cashier, he saw the cheese and made a comment that a customer had just returned a blue cheese for mold. At first I thought he was making a joke, but then realized he didn't know it was me and was trying to make fun of it. I replied yes, that was me, and it was covered in fuzzy mold, not the good kind. His response was that he "didn't see that." It's one thing to give an item a cursory look and decide a customer is incorrect, but to try and and then make fun of that to someone you think is a different customer is just rude and ridiculous. The worst part is that a different item I bought during that trip was then also covered in mold when I opened it up, and I had to return that as well. Looking at other reviews, it seems this is a pretty common issue....
Read moreWe recently caught Dumbo Market trying to pass off expired stock as fresh.
We bought a bar of Toblerone from Dumbo Market that had a BEST BEFORE label of "12 2023".
When we got home, we opened the chocolate and immediately found it tasted extremely stale. That's when we noticed it looked like the BEST BEFORE label was a sticker instead of printed directly onto the container.
We lifted the sticker, and found that someone had scratched out the original expiration date of JUN 2021 underneath the sticker.
It's absolutely wild to me that Dumbo Market would try to sell a piece of chocolate that's almost 2 years old past its best before date by faking a label. This isn't particularly expensive stock, this is a $3.99 chocolate bar in an extremely overpriced grocery store.
It's one thing to leave expired stock on the shelves. Intentionally trying to fake BEST BEFORE labels is a whole new low.
I would recommend going out of your way to avoid this place. It's not worth the chance that you may end up paying way too much for something that may be completely expired and pretending...
Read moreWorst market I’ve ever been to. Absolutely ridiculous prices, extremely poor quality, and poor selection.
Prices: I don’t remember any relevant examples other than 1 small pack of fruit loops costing $12 vs. $2 at CVS. Prices are easily 2-3x more expensive than Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods for a worse selection and quality. Spent $60 for a few snacks and $200 for a day’s worth of basic medium quality groceries.
Quality: most of the fruits and vegetables look dry and went bad very, very quickly. Even the canned goods were mere weeks away from going bad — never seen this before. Probably because barely anyone’s still shopping here.
The area is mostly touristy with a few new apartment buildings but no wonder no one’s going here!!
@Management: If you see this, just lower prices so locals shop and your inventory days lower to prevent waste and poor quality… you can’t offset low demand with high prices or else this...
