Walking around the city I typed “chess” on google maps and “Fred Wilson Chess Books” popped up. I didn’t know what to expect with only two photos of the building entrance on the business Google page.
I had the great pleasure of stumbling upon this chess bookstore on the 7th floor of an office building in Union Square and chatting with the owner Fred Wilson for two hours about chess, New York City and pizza.
Fred has been in business for 50 years, teaching chess, writing books, selling and collecting. Probably the only chess centric book shop in the US. He gave me a tour of his shop - hundreds of new and used books, on chess history, openings, endgames, tactics, rare books, international books as well as his personal collection. I bought two books he wrote and five vintage books from his $3 bin.
