I have found a new favorite paint and decorating store and I want everyone to know about my experience at Janovic Paint in Soho.
I am in the process of doing some medium sized renovations in my NY apartment (rental) so I wandered in to look at shades. Kathryn Anderson took me through lots of choices. That could have been overwhelming for me, but she managed to keep that from happening by figuring out what I was trying to convey and then eliminating all the stuff that didn't fit. The long and short of it was, I found her to be engaged, helpful, patient… very patient, and pushing no particular agenda. She listened, suggested and wrote down the options that I gravitated toward so I would remember them when I would be ready to pull the trigger. I had other aspects to work on in the apartment so I put the shades aside knowing that Kathryn had a copy for when I had all my ducks in order.
Fast forward 7 months and I'm finally ready to commit to shades AND paint so another trip to Janovic, this time with a good friend and our mission to bring all these elements together and place an order. As it turns out, Kathryn has a counterpart who is a paint color specialist. Her name is Caroline.
Caroline treats the process of selecting colors like sitting down to tea and trying all the cookies and cakes and biscuits along with a warm cup of tea looking for the best and most delicious combination of colors. Of course Kathryn pulled up all the shade items that I had liked, I had also brought fabric swatches from furniture and rug, and my friend and I spent 3 hours picking my colors. Caroline loves what she does. Her enthusiasm is unmistakable. The amount of time it took was largely because I am not well equipped to make these kinds of decisions. So, everyone helping me that day was pretty great. We ended up with what I think is going to be a spectacular looking apartment.
Come let Kathryn and Caroline help you make these important decisions. You will be so glad you did. I...
Read moreIf you have to buy paint, it's so much better to come here than to just look at paint chips at your neighborhood hardware store. The store is well-stocked (with every conceivable paint supply as well as large paint swatches that you can take home), but what really makes it worth the trip is the store's color consultant. Caroline is basically magic. When I came in, I had only the vaguest and most clueless sense of how I wanted my bedroom to feel ("kind of calm and Zen") and wasn't even sure what color family I was looking for. Caroline showed me a couple of colors, and -- based on my reactions to those -- was able to zero in exactly what I wanted. She didn't pressure me to make a decision, and ultimately suggested that I first buy a paint sample and a small board so that I could get a realistic view of the color in different lights before committing to it.
I'm very happy with the colors I ended up with, and I will definitely come back the next time I need paint. Honestly, I'd probably stop in just to chat with Caroline again. She's a joy to talk to, and incredibly good at...
Read moreRoger is the best paint person in New York City. I bought a gallon of blue paint that I used. When I went to get a quart for touchups, I went to two different paint stores, including another Janovic, (only bc of proximity) and both stores gave me paint that didn’t match and was filled with bubbles inside the can. Everyone else has been baffled by the bubbles and non color matching. I came to Janovic on Thompson to see Roger and he knew instantly what was going on. He fixed the problem immediately. I can now finish my huge mural in peace and confidence. I can’t even believe what I experienced. Someone please give this man recognition and a raise. If you are a New Yorker with any paint issues at all, please save time and go directly to Roger. He has an amazing sense of humor, looks out for customers and is extremely professional and knowledgeable. Also, everyone else at the store is awesome. I’ve been coming here for four years and they never disappoint....
