If I could give Barry more than five stars I would. I have never in my life had a tattoo experience like this. Lemme give you the sparknotes version: I wasn't nervous all day or all week or all month up until I rang the doorbell. I think I got intimidated because I'm just some country bumpkin and Barry is an incredibly talented NYC artist, but as soon as he spoke all my nerves went away. I'm not sure how to explain it without using the word "vibe," so I'll just say he has a very calming and inviting vibe that'll put you at ease. the studio itself is also impressive. Barry has managed to make the space homey enough that you feel welcomed and sterile enough that you feel safe. These are definitely two things you want to feel immediately upon entering a studio, at least in my opinion. there is so so SO much attention to detail in the sketching/stenciling process. If you didn't feel confident yet you definitely will now. Rather than slapping on a design and calling it a day, Barry will have you move yourself around to make sure the design sits perfectly on your body. I got a back piece, and for example he had me move my arms in different directions to make sure the design looked good no matter how my shoulder muscles move. Not sure if that is a big deal to anyone else but it really impressed me lol. when it comes to the actual tattooing, Barry does it exactly how you want it: light handed which makes for minimal pain, frequent check-ins to make sure you're doing alright, and frequent pauses to step back and make sure everything is coming out the way he invisions it. It's clear that this is a passion and he takes pride in his work.
I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of right now! Bottom line is that you will not regret your decision to get tattooed by Barry. You will have a professional experience with other worldly results. I will definitely...
Read moreListen, I'm covered in tattoos—and almost all of my big pieces are from Barry. And for good reason: whenever someone at a bar asks about my tattoos, they always ask who did the florals on my arm. So out of all my other pieces, his universally stand out.
As a woman, I often worry about the comfortability (both physically and mentally) of unique placements, so when in doubt I defer to Barry—because I trust him. He has tattooed my stomach down onto my hip, my knee, my shin, the back of both thighs, and (filled in) most of my half sleeve. So we have spent quite a few hours together and all I can say is that he's incredibly professional and kind, always making sure I'm comfortable without question. And he's so passionate! He's genuinely excited to see how his art comes alive on your body. There is a difference between someone who does tattoos and a tattoo artist, and he is truly the latter. He makes sure that each piece fits your body perfectly, that every detail is exactly aligned with what you want. When I first started getting tattoos, I hated my body. But I loved the art I was putting on it, and as my tattoos became part of my body, slowly I started loving my body too. Barry is largely the reason for that, and I can't recommend him enough. By the end of the session you'll be grinning at yourself, and you'll be able to share that joy with someone who cares about the quality of his art and how it looks on YOU.
(Plus, I've never had a fine line piece heal as perfectly as his have—I've never even needed a touch up. That's quite the bonus, especially if you have to travel to get a...
Read moreHands down the best tattoo experience I’ve had in my life (thus far). Here’s why:
Studio: clean, airy & cozy. You immediately feel comfortable walking in, and throughout your session. It is not cramped & appointments are scheduled to allow for time & space with artists. Good music. Lots of plants & natural light, which I’ve never experienced in a tattoo studio!
Artist: I worked with Barry, who is friendly, professional, attentive, & supremely talented. He is respectful & advocates for individual agency. He is not limiting or restrictive in design concepts, & will work with you to achieve the desired look, though customers may likely gravitate to him because of his beautiful floral designs.
Customer service: I’ve always worked with artists who were super late or inconsiderate, charging tons for lost time. Barry is neither of those things. He is on time; all session time is spent getting to know you, perfecting your design, tattooing, & letting your body settle before departure. He is organized & designs your piece in advance to review on the day of and amend as/if needed. Communication was great & he is accommodating.
Location: relatively easy to find! Right down the street from L train stop.
I will definitely return to Barry for more tattoos in the future, & highly recommend his services. This experience left such a indelible...
