Hospitality at Bluestone Lane Dumbo
My partner and I had a disappointing experience at Bluestone Lane Dumbo, which seems consistent with other reviews. We visited on a rainy morning, looking forward to warming up with some coffee, and tried to use a promo/reward for a free barista beverage. The process should have been straightforward; we selected the in-store redemption option, received a coupon code, and proceeded to the cashier.
The initial cashier, a blonde woman, immediately told us they couldn't redeem the coupon in-store and that we had to switch to mobile app redemption, which was no longer possible. Despite this, she insisted they had no way to enter promo codes, and she would ask her manager for assistance.
The manager, a dark-haired man, approached us reluctantly. We showed him the reward details and ordered a large flat white, specifying half-and-half milk. Although the manager finally entered the code, which worked, the situation escalated when our order came out as a small flat white. When we questioned this, the manager claimed the coupon was only valid for a small beverage. However, the reward terms didn't specify a size restriction, only a value limit of $5. We explained we were willing to pay the difference for a large.
The manager responded rudely, raising his voice and creating a scene. Despite our experience and understanding of Bluestone Lane’s policies, he insisted the system restricted us to a small size, which contradicted our past experiences and the promotional details. Eventually, he remade the drink as a large, but the entire interaction was unprofessional and unpleasant.
I've worked in customer service management for nearly a decade, and this experience lacked the fundamental principles of hospitality and customer retention. There was no transparency, and the staff seemed poorly trained in handling promotions and customer concerns. While we generally enjoy Bluestone Lane, this experience at the Dumbo location, particularly under its current management, was disappointing and highlighted a lack of professionalism and...

This morning, after dropping my child off at the daycare next door, I stopped by Bluestone Lane during the 8 a.m. rush. The place was bustling with a line of people waiting for their beverages or ‘brekkie’, all served by a single barista who was taking orders, preparing drinks, and serving customers.
As I waited, I perused their menu for inspiration, hoping to find something different from my usual whole milk cappuccino. When it was finally my turn to order, I noticed that the cashier charged me more than the menu price. Although the difference was less than a dollar, I felt it was not an honest practice.
I politely inquired about the discrepancy and was met with a condescending response. The cashier asked if I wanted to see his screen, insisting that the price displayed there was correct. I mentioned that the menu should be updated if prices had increased. He first suggested that prices varied, but I pointed out that both prices referred to the same 12oz cappuccino. He then suggested it was due to taxes, but I showed him both prices before tax. Ultimately, he said it wasn’t up to him and asked if I still wanted the cappuccino.
Despite the frustrating interaction and the 20-minute wait, I decided to proceed with my order. Just a heads-up in case you’re tempted to go inside—be aware of the...
Read moreBluestone Lane DUMBO is a charming café that brings a touch of upscale ease to your typical brunch spot. Inspired by Australian café culture, it offers a cozy yet elevated experience—you’re warmly greeted and seated upon entry, which adds a nice, refined touch without being overly formal.
My husband and I ordered a latte and an espresso to start, along with the Breakfast Bowl and the BL Big Brekkie. The flavors were fresh and well-balanced overall. However, I did find the poached eggs a bit inconsistent—some were perfectly jammy while others leaned toward overdone. The Breakfast Bowl had a vibrant mix of ingredients, but the lemon-based vinaigrette was a little too citrus-forward for my taste. If you’re sensitive to acidic flavors, I’d recommend asking for the dressing on the side or choosing an alternative.
Despite that, the ambiance, service, and presentation made for a lovely experience. Their drink menu is aesthetically pleasing—with colorful matcha lattes, smoothies, and more that I’m already planning to try next time.
If you’re in DUMBO and looking for a stylish spot for coffee or brunch, Bluestone Lane is definitely...
