Would not recommend for ashtanga practitioners visiting NYC or yoga practitioners that enjoy the freedom to do what’s best for their bodies. I took the all levels ashtanga class. I have been doing ashtanga yoga for 10 years.... In the middle of backbends the instructor told me to leave if I didn't do exactly what he said. It took me a moment to realize that I was being berated for not following the sequence exactly as it was being called out because I was so deep in my own practice. He was yelling at me during my drop back and I am glad I did not get injured. If you're looking to learn ashtanga and feel called to the spiritual aspects of yoga, please do not come here. It breaks my heart to see Ashtanga yoga being taught like this.
No humility, all ego.
Alex, the instructor, is so full of himself that he feels like he can dictate how other people practice. Seems like insecurity to me. He made up his own opening mantra that was a mix of English/Sanskrit and chanted in a fake Indian accent (not my taste). His count is off and the only thing traditional about his ashtanga class was 5 sets of navasana, which I found very odd. We didn’t even do 5 Sun A’s.
The intentions of this place just feels wrong. It's westernized yoga in the worst way. And I am truly traumatized by what I experienced here. In my 10 years of practice I have never had a teacher berate me in front of the class while practicing and tell me to leave if I did not obey his every word. I guess I got the real New York experience.
I would like to clarify for everyone that we were practicing backbends and I took a moment to drop back as we were transitioning to the next posture and was asked to leave. I was not practicing my own sequence. You can see the energy and vibe of this place simply from looking at the response below. No accountability and not an accurate depiction of what occurred. I was following the sequence 90%. I would say I modified based on my own practice 10% throughout the class. Alex yelled at me to do exactly as he said or leave. I chose to leave.
Come practice here if you want to see a white man play spiritual guru. Just warning: you may be verbally abused by Alex. Reading other reviews it seems like this is not the only time he has berated students...
Read moreI took the 45min Beginners Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga with Carmen! I wanna start by saying I usually enjoy all types of yoga, teachers, and studios. I went to this class with a friend for her to get more of an introduction/foundation for yoga and it was not good for that! The space itself is beautiful but there were several things that made the 45 minute class not very pleasant. There is a recommendation to arrive 15 minutes early and one person arrived as the class was supposed to begin and was chastised for it as they walked up the stairs(by being yelled at as they walked up the stairs) most classes i've taken just begin without waiting for a member to join in, everyone who needed to rent a mat also was treated a lil sassily despite them charging $5 a mat rental, so glad I brought mine. We weren't allowed to have water bottles next to us which is kinda insane especially since it was not a full class by any means and it was a pretty hot day. The teacher was very rushed and almost disinterested, she only mentioned two positions by their names which I wouldn't expect from a beginner class. There was a guy there that sat in the corner the entire class observing, he was never introduced, l assumed he was a TA? but especially in a class of only women with a female instructor it was a bit unnerving. I hate that i'm hating so much but even the music was very loud and not good quality, like a youtube video almost? a bit just headache inducing, ALSO during shavasana I heard a camera shutter sound go off which is also insane!!!! sorry I wanted to love this beautiful space but this class with this instructor is just not worth it! Go to any other studio in the city or st marks yoga right across the street as i’ve literally never experienced anything like this. Really not trying to be a negative nelly here, the space is itself IS stunning and there is a lil rooftop garden space but this was the least balancing/relaxing/fluid yoga class i’ve ever...
Read moreIn yoga philosophy, there's the idea of Sukha or cultivating a happy or good space; Alex has created a remarkable space at New Vibe Yoga for you to go inward and develop your own good internal space through the practice of Ashtanga yoga.
Excellent for all levels of practitioners. It's a magical yoga home to grow your practice. And a sacred space to go inward. It's a place to get grounded. And also a place to challenge yourself and take off in exciting and new ways.
There is beauty around every corner of New Vibe, always something to admire and appreciate that makes you pause and take a long deep breath.
Alex is lovely, and so is the whole New Vibe team. There is such fantastic energy in the entire community, both instructors and practitioners alike. They are a tremendous bunch.
Since we're currently in a pandemic, we can't gather in person for yoga classes at present. However, Alex puts such heart into online streaming led classes, with warm and welcoming energy and great cues to keep you awake in your practice and keep you going despite the pandemic pause. It's a great trade-off until things are safe to open up again.
Anyway, in short, I love New Vibe Yoga! Such a unique and extra special place to...
