The long line had dissuaded me but for some reason had heard a lot about the dosa man and his dosas, hence despite the long line, this second time decided to wait it out. It was a 2 hour ordeal and about a hour and half wait later got to know we had barely made it for the day. There were a handful of people still behind us waiting to get their orders. We ordered 2 dosas, one regular masala dosa and other Pondicherry special. I was watching him as he was taking the last few orders of the people in the line just ahead of me and at that time I could tell he had very limited masala and other ingredients remaining which he was trying to use sparingly to âaccommodateâ for the last few remaining people he said had âmade itâ for that day. But honestly for those last few people including us the dosas were SUB PAR. There was very âlittleâ masala that he was adding to the dosa. The special masala we ordered did not even have all the usual ingredients that make it special, he was out of material and yet trying to make money of the last few orders. There was hardly any chutney left, barely got one cup of sambhar and when asked about the other sambhar for the second order of dosa he very easily said, thatâs all he could give as he had to keep some for few others in the line after. I could not believe why that man was taking the last few orders when he could not even fulfill those orders for what the customers were paying for. Just because people were last in the line does not mean they get sub standard stuff, after all we ALL paid the same money the first customer did, didnât we? Honestly after waiting 2 hours, paying full price, the flavor was not worth it. Honestly, TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED.I have had better dosas at many Indian restaurants. NOT WORTH THE WAIT, so beware if you are waiting too long, be prepared to be disappointed even more. Oh and it was19 dollars for those 2 dosas and he never gave a dollar...
Read moreI have been wanting to review this place for a while now but every time I come, my primitive senses overtake me and I end up eating the delicious Dosa Thiru prepares. Every time. I usually do not like to review unless I can at least give you guys a picture so you can get your palad glands moist and running. Anyway. So today, on this rainy day, i managed for some reason to control myself and was able to capture a photo of what I ordered. What you see beloved new yorkers is not on the menu. Thiru calls it Dosa Samosa. Its basically his famous pondicherry with half a samosa and some extra kale thrown inside. The result of this secret dish is pure aromatic healthy crunchy awesomeness. I have ordered in the past the Masala Dosa, which comes with a salad and a small soup on the side together with a samosa. They have never disappointed, and specially for the price. His whole menu makes me want to become full vegan, if it wasnt for me my hangry glucose problema I would. Specially eating this food. Its fulfilling. Its yummy. Its healthy. Its worth 5 Michellin stars. Its a great deal for your pocket. Its perfection. Thank you Thiru for still serving this in the middle of the pandemic.
Ps. I take it that Chef Thiru Kumar is a man of great heart. Not only is he very conversational and nice, he is kind to the people who know him and are regulars. I only come here once a month or so but for other people who are his FANS, he seems to âpay it forwardâ. In fact the special menu item i ordered today was revealed to me by what seems to be a recent NYU graduate who, because of COVID, seems to be having a hard time finding a job. He was understanding of her situation and had some kind of arrangement only accesible to people in his inner foodie circle. I am glad chefs like this exists. No fuzz. No dazzle. The food speaks for itself and he takes care of his...
Read moreWorst experience i had on my trip to NYC. Waited for hours in line, because I had heard it was the best... I could not have been more disappointed. We were at the end of the line and it became our responsibility to tell everyone who walked up we were to be the last customers of the day. A man came up behind us and got irrate at us informing him this. The worker came and told him we were the last ones. He had given us an ice chest we had to drag along behind us with a small sign that said they were closed. The irrate man kicked it and continued to yell at us. The worker promised to make it worth our while... well that didn't happen. It seemed any customer of Indian decent received exceptional service and large portions. However when we reached the cart to order we were informed they were out of practically everything, but he would make us something special. He literally gave us burnt crusty scraps, maybe half the portion size as previous customers received, then charged us full price. After that the irrate man and his family that joined at the end (they were all of Indian decent) was served much better looking food and in reasonable sized portions. This experience ate up a large portion of our day. It was the first solo trip I had taken with my son in years. And truly the only disappointing experience we had there. I would recommend avoiding this place completely, unless of course you are Indian... I regret giving this place a chance. There is too much delicious food in NYC to waste your time on rudeness and...
