These days, learning a second or third language is a good skill to have and it is of significant importance because it will turn out useful somehow. This bookstore fills an important need for New York's Chinatown and beyond: it's one of the very few businesses in the area that sells Chinese-language books and materials on Chinese culture (including art supplies).

That said, I'm very disappointed with the staff here, who deceived me in selling a Hong Kong-themed model kit at a 50% discount but neglected to inform their customers that the kit was not only used but also missing plenty of parts. I knew I couldn't return the kit thanks to their "no refund, no exchange" policy. But when I brought it back to the bookstore to show the saleswoman, she dug in her heels and said I should've checked the (sealed) kit on-site either before or after purchasing it. To be fair, she did offer another item of my choice at half-price. Still, her response struck me as needlessly defensive: no apology, just a feeble "it's not my fault" line.

It's a shame, because I really do believe Chinatown could use more bookstores like this one. But I won't be...

Eastern Bookstore NYC is a local gem and has been an important cultural institution in the area for nearly half a century. My wife, award-winning author Qin Sun Stubis, held the U.S. launch of her new book, "Once Our Lives," there and we were beyond impressed by the bookstore's brilliant staging of the event and their extreme attention to detail. The store boasts a wealth of Asian literature and calligraphy tools, and the gallery is a beautiful exhibition and presentation space.
