Toraji Chinatown is lovely restaurant. It has a bar, many booths and table. I came in on a Saturday around 4 for an early dinner. I was greeted the minute I walked in and brought to a booth seating. The staff was great and always polite. My waiter was Kensuke. It was a special day so I ordered The Premium Wagyu Course. I was reluctant on the beef tongue but I decided to try it anyway. We started with appetizers - a tasty crisp salad. I think it was suppose to be 3 different types of kimchi and two piece of Wagyu sushi. One was cooked and one was not. Everything was Delicious! From there we went on to the grill, I let Kensuke grill since I wasn’t sure how cooked everything was to be. I could eat everything raw but wanted to try it how it should be cooked. Kensuke first cooked the beef tongue. It was an Atsugiri (thick) cut they seared the sides. It was actually very good. The outside was a little crispy from the searing sort of like when you fry up sausage links and the inside was like texture of liver cooked to precision just enough that it is cooked but still uncooked but smooth and silky. It was also salted previously and I like salt. We went on to the Wagyu meat and they added in a short-rib. Kensuke cooked them one at a time so not to let anything over cook or sit to get cool. I had the seafood last a piece of scallop and lobster I took the lobster off a little early because I was scared it would over cooked but it was too early and a little rough. Next time I must wait for Kensuke. My cold noodle was next. Cold noodle with two type of seaweed, cucumber and a bit of kimchi - it gave the meal a refreshing turn from the bbq. When I initially order I thought it might be too much food but the portion was just perfect for me. Just enough but not to much. Last came the almond pudding with some fruit. Delicious!!! All I can say it was a great experience and everything was so tasty and perfect. I wanted to try the raw beef but I was full so I will definitely be back. They also gave me a coupon for another piece of sushi for my next meal. Yum Yum. Lastly Kensuke walk me to the door offered me a piece of gum and open the door. to say goodbye. Until next time...

Read moreI came into this place having a high expectation, since I tried Yakiniku Gen, which is also under the Toraji Co., and had a great time. This place offers an a la carte menu, as well as an entry level course menu similar to what COTE offers for $70. The course menu comes with an appetizers, sides, 4 different cuts of meat, and a dessert. The overall value, on paper, was amazing. However, that's about it for the pros.
The food it self was a hit or miss. The meat selection was fine, and the sides are okay. However, everything else was mediocre, with dessert being the worse offender. The bigger problem was the service. There was no check up on us or any thing for a long time, even as it passes their closing time. We have to ask the waiter multiple times for the bill, and multiple times to for them to take our payment. There were no table clean up before dessert. We actually have to ask for dessert multiple times before they preparing. Basically, there was no attention given to us at all, and it was not like it was busy that day. By the end, there were only 3 small parties, including us. I do not know why the service was that bad that day. With all these in mind, I do not think $70 is justified for mediocre food, and a below...
