Shop Fair of Alphabet City — Local services in New York

I don't live in the LES these days, but I still travel a short while to shop in this clean, well-organized and well-stocked supermarket. Shop Fair has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere that has kept me coming back over the years. The produce is first-rate, and they have a wide selection of meats and poultry. I especially appreciate their sizable and relatively inexpensive selection of fresh herbs and bottled seasonings. Being in a neighborhood that has a large Latino population, you will find many ingredients and cuts of meat here necessary for many varieties of Hispanic, Caribbean, Central-and-South American dishes. It's easy to find good bargains here, but be sure to compare locally on the price of staples—some items are inexplicably pricier than they should be. Shop the sales, and you can't go wrong. The friendly staff and neighborhood vibe make this store a pleasure to patronize, and I'll keep shopping here as long as both Shop Fair and I are open...

I was very happy when Shop Fair took over the old Fine Fare supermarket by me. The transition was a bit bumpy, but once they got organized, there was some nice fresh produce and decent prices. However, the other day I bought a pound of frozen raw shrimp and when I went to cook them they were rotten. I tried to return them two days after purchase and was informed by a very disinterested manager that there is a 24-hour return policy on frozen food. This makes no sense, as frozen food is the thing you DON'T cook the day you buy it! Having recently lost my job, that $10 was an expensive lesson and left a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure I will continue to shop there, as there are three other grocery stores equidistant from them. Also, I would advise against buying fresh fish from them, as one day I looked at some fresh tuna and noticed that the expiration date was THREE WEEKS from that date! No fresh fish...

Shop Fair in Far Rockaway Queens is horrible. I WAITED four hours for my delivery, mind u this is perishable food. I live less than 10 minutes from the store. Inexcusable. No supervision what so ever. I just wanted my money back. It's only because we are in a black community, no where else would this happen.. Also when the food did finally arrive one of my beverage containers was spelled all over my groceries. This will be the last time shopping there, I'll go to the other (Supermarket).So much for trying to support your own community.Shop Fair right...
