I descended into this darkened basement bodyshop in an effort to live out the namesake of this franchised fitness concept. SWEAT I did, until the manager removed me mid-set. An anonymous client had flagged me as malodorous.
This establishment is a forever flow of bodies coursing through a cramped studio space. Every 10 minutes they send a spandex spawning of strangers out onto the floor to mirror the human figures repeating exercises on screens in loop.
To remixes of lewd party bangers, itās a choreography of highly-proximate heavy-breathing people avoiding touch at the closest of range. We surrender our agency to an unceasing timer with 5 second warnings and a final buzzer. This convivial near-hazardous chaos is a triumph of taming unruly bodies, a 40 minute sampling of completely ceding to corporate kinetic control.
When the manager asked me to leave and only return if I applied antiperspirant I automatically complied with his authority. This mechanical modality of metabolic conditioning had put me into a pliable mental-state, and I was enjoying the sub-space of our collective domination.
In duty, I ran back to the change-room and smelled myself, and then asked a stranger to smell me, both of us confirming that my odor was not out of the ordinary. I texted a friend and asked if there was a conspiracy against me, that people were not telling me that I had an untoward tang. You're a normal smelling man, she swore.
No matter, I was happy to submit to the demand that I apply to my underarms the complementary Dove Dry-Spray. Then I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and snapped out of a trance. Whether it was indeed my foul smell, or my copious sweat, or my notoriously eager exertions, my raw and wild self no longer felt welcome here. In I went to the shower, soaped myself twice, and planned to leave in peace.
But before I did I had a kind and calm word with the manager, a competent and well-meaning man. I told him that in my ideal world the person who found my odor offensive would have the courage to confront me directly. That he could tell my accuser-informant just that.
Abuzz with an incomplete workout I looked from the foot of the stairs in an unawkward gaze back at my former cohort. I made no effort to identify who found me unpalatable. Instead I was in agreement with the perfect panorama of interchangeability, the many silhouettes subdued in Lululemon uniformity, this fitness thing a flattening and hardening of the evidence of inherited variation, the near-naked flesh of my beloved public dissolving together into a single...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeen coming here for over a year and absolutely love it. I have done all types of fitness classes all over the world and used to be an avid ClassPass user but the variety, consistency and variety of workouts at sweat is unmatched. Awesome music and instructors. and the absolute best part is the frequency of class times. Takes the stress out of your fitness routine and so doable for a busy lifestyle. This location is also super convenient to a ton of trains, Union square and sag to drop by Trader Joeās for groceries before or after. Itās also very reasonably priced for what you get but recommend the 8-12 class pack a month as I find itās the best value. They also have blow dryers, straighteners, deodorant, towels, and everything you need in the showers which is super nice if youāre heading into work or dinner after.
If I had anything Iād change or wish they had, itād be lunchtime classes and more consistency with the bathrooms and AC. Cleanliness and coolness inside is hit or miss but usually its fine and understandable given how many people are in and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLove Sweat440 for the efficient 40-minute circuit training with 4 stations and a different focus each day (canāt be bothered to do longer post-pandemic), the convenience of classes literally starting every 10 minutes (especially nice for flexible/constantly changing schedules so you donāt miss your workout or have to wait another hour for the next one), and of course the super friendly and welcoming staff (Dan, Tyler, Sofi, Chris, Mengwe, Claudia who always have a smile on their faces) š I started on ClassPass and became a member a couple years ago.
The Sweat440 format is different than a standard class where you have one dedicated instructor and everyone doing the same movement, itās usually 1-2 coaches circulating through 4 stations, each with 9 people doing 3 rounds of 3 different workouts. Great for people who enjoy variation and can push themselves/be pushed by others; and if you need guidance just ask the coaches or pay attention their...
