Rarely has so much been owed to so many by so few.
Like so many of the other reviewers, my partner and I purchased an OMHU couch from Teak and have yet to receive it. We ordered our couch on July 28th, and over the course of many months, we’ve been strung along and misled about the status of our purchase. In July, we confirmed, in writing, that our couch would be delivered in 8-10 weeks. About 2 weeks into our waiting, we were told that manufacturing had begun via seemingly a standard template email. We waited and waited. No communications.
In September, we reached out to inquire about the status of our order, and we were informed that it was still in the process of shipping to the US. We asked when to expect the delivery, and they said mid-October. On October 9th, we received an email saying that the couch had arrived in the US and was clearing customs, and that we should expect delivery in about a week. A week goes by—nothing.
We reached out again, twice in late October, and we received no reply. I called the customer service number which immediately declined due to a full inbox. I called the storefront number, and no one picked up. Then, just yesterday, we received an email (which spelled my name wrong btw) from Teak saying that they were in the process of filing for bankruptcy. The email included no avenue for recourse, no contact information, no information about pending orders, and no offers to rectify the situation.
This entire process has been incredibly frustrating and demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism on the part of Teak. Exogenous circumstances, such as tariffs, are understandable, and I am totally willing to work with a small, local business in dealing with these issues that are out of their control. I am NOT, however, willing to deal with the absolute lack of transparency, communication, and support for an order worth THOUSANDS of dollars. Make no mistake, this is not a small issue like when an online order comes in the wrong size or not exactly as described. This is a company taking $4,500 and failing to deliver—this is a clear cut case of breach of contract.
My partner and I have spent months and months, couch-less, in our new apartment, and the most likely outcome will be that we need to dispute the charge and wait many MORE weeks for a new couch. At this point, I am extremely suspicious that the couch was never manufactured, shipped, and received in the US. In other forums, the CEO (and her friend?) have alleged fraudulent business practice by OMHU, but based on the poor communication and complete lack of customer support from Teak, I am inclined to believe that fault lies with Teak.
This saga has been a terrible experience, and in hindsight, I should never have engaged in business with Teak. The age-old adage of caveat emptor is applicable here—anyone intending to purchase anything from Teak should be wary of their practices, and honestly, should probably look elsewhere. Do not support a business that is willing to take your hard-earned...
Read moreI ADVISE ANYONE WHO HAS ORDERED THE TEDDY SOFA FROM TEAK NEW YORK TO IMMEDIATELY CONTACT THEIR BANK OR CREDIT CARD COMPANY TO ISSUE CHARGE BACK AND REPORT THE CHARGE AS FRAUDULENT SINCE TEAK HAS ACCEPTED PAYMENT AND HAS NO INTENTION OF DELIVERING THE PRODUCT YOU ORDERED. THIS IS LIKELY YOUR BEST CHANCE AT CUTTING LOSSES AND BEING COMPENSATED.
I ordered the Teddy sofa in July, and as of October 23 the order still has not been delivered. I went online to look at Google reviews to see if there was any information that might give me insight into the delay. It turns out that MANY other people experienced the same problem which seems to be attributed to terrible management by the CEO. The initial estimate for delivery was 8-10 weeks, and I am at almost 3 months with no update on the whereabouts or potential delivery of the item that was purchased. I have tried emailing and calling, but they are essentially not responding and their voice mailbox is full so you can't even leave messages. I read that many customers were forced to cancel their orders. Many customers also report receiving false information about the status of their orders only to NEVER receive them. The owner/CEO really needs to have accountability for this major SCAM of an operation that they are running. I think the company really should be careful because it seems they are committing borderline (if not actual) fraud by accepting orders and being paid in full with no ability or guarantee to actually deliver the product. I contacted the CEO, Caitlin, after finding her contact through Google Reviews, and I am requesting my order to be canceled and refunded in full. I will provide updates on whether Teak New York follows through on this or if they intend to keep customers' money without actually delivering a product.
UPDATE (10/27/25): Teak New York is only responding to Google review comments because these are viewed publicly. I have requested multiple times now to their email accounts that my order be canceled since they are not fulfilling orders, and I requested that they issue refund but they are not responding. They respond on Google reviews that they will "make it right." I am responding to them publicly here, that what would "make it right" is for them to cancel the order and issue a refund.
Finally received email from Teak: As others have mentioned, they are in fact filing for bankruptcy. They state that they will fulfill as many orders "as possible" which means some will NOT be fulfilled. Even the ones they do fulfill, there is ZERO time frame as it could be months and months of waiting and they also claim there is no way for them to provide updates. In short, maybe you will get your order or not. They...
Read moreOrdered a Teddy sofa from them about 10 weeks ago and haven’t heard a peep. Then, today my girlfriend discovered that Teak had filed for (most likely chapter 11) bankruptcy protection and is reorganizing. While the U.S. bankruptcy system is good at preserving whatever value may be left in businesses like Teak or those in a similar situation, it is not great if you just prepaid and ordered a large piece of furniture in the past weeks/months.
Your payment is more or less gone at this point, and you are in the position of an unsecured creditor. This means the bankruptcy court administering the distribution of repayments from Teak to various creditors (vendors, lenders, customers who paid for furniture…) puts you near the end of the list to get whatever residual value comes out of the bankruptcy process.
As such, getting a refund from the store is likely going to be hard or impossible because it’s likely that the judge/mediator of the bankruptcy process would forbid the company from issuing refunds to customers before other creditors who are higher up on the list of repayment priority have their obligations satisfied. If this is the case, which I suspect it is, it’s not fully Teak’s fault they can’t issue a refund (it still sucks that they kept taking customer orders when they likely knew in what direction they were heading, financially, so you can blame them for that)
What does this mean for you? You should probably save your breath and time and either (i) pursue a refund through your credit card company, (ii) try to get in touch with the manufacturer of the sofa. If your order was placed long enough ago, there’s a chance Teak forwarded the entirety of your payment to the manufacturer, which may put you in a position to negotiate delivery directly with the manufacturer (note that this may cost extra), which could save a good amount of time compared to re-ordering the same sofa from a different source.
Unrelated, but interesting - Teak sometimes autocorrects to “steal” in my phone. Thank you for your attention to...
