Itās been a great journey for me restarting my practice at The Furnace after a 12+ year hiatus from in-room Bikram and 4+ years without regular Pilates. I was hesitant at firstāit took me a whole year to gather the courage to try after first discovering the studioābut since I started, Iāve maintained 3-4 classes per week and have greatly enjoyed all the benefits.
In the past six months, Iāve lost 30 pounds of fat while maintaining muscle and strength on top of quieting my mind and practicing my patience. I initially took Bikram classes five days a week. It felt amazing to be back in the room, surrounded by the communal energy and guided by a skilled instructor. The heat and sweating create such a powerful detox, while the poses build strength, flexibility, stability and stillness.
However, I quickly realized I didnāt have the leg strength I needed to fully engage in the standing series. Although I was nervous to try "Inferno Hot Pilates" (which sounds terrifying!), I knew I needed the classās focus on strengthening the legs, glutes, quads, and hamstrings.
The Pilates class is a full-body workout, including cardio, core, and upper body segments. Itās definitely challenging, but Iām always happy to see the diversity in classāpeople of all ages and fitness levels. The key, I think, is to focus on yourself and go at your own pace. While the class is structured around HIIT, taking slow and steady movements helps you get through it and prepare for the next one.
Together, these classes have helped me tone my body and refocus my mind, boosting my confidence for additional training and conditioning outside of the studio. I wouldnāt have regained that confidence or adaptability without The Furnace.
The studio itself is one of the best hot yoga studios Iāve ever been ināclean, well-ventilated, and spacious. The class offerings are wonderfully varied and ample. The lighting is perfect, and the overhead fans provide a much-needed blast of air now and then. Plus, the changing rooms and check-in area are great.
Lastly, my favorite thing about joining The Furnace has been the community. Iāve met some incredible people who inspire me every day. From the knowledgeable, passionate instructors and dedicated owners to my fellow students, yogis, athletes, and first-timersāthe studio truly is a community of warm and welcoming people. My favorite part of the day is walking from my home office to and from The Furnace, seeing familiar faces on the street, and feeling grateful for my time here in Bay Ridge, feeling genuine gratitude for the present...

Since moving to Bay Ridge from Hoboken, I've found it to be a fantastic place and a welcoming transition. The classes are diverse, and the schedule is refreshingly dynamic. Some of my favorites are Bikram (both Flow and 75), Hot Vinyasa, Power Flow, Pilates, and Ashtanga. They've recently expanded their offerings and space, now featuring heated weight classes. I just tried FORGE, and I'm absolutely hooked! If only there were more hours in the dayāIād be taking even more classes.
