The quality of staff at this hospital varies greatly. Some will take their time and explain things well, while others give misinformation. Some staff did not even seem to understand how the epidural machine works. Several times during the night the machine started beeping due to occlusion (aka the tube being pinched). When we asked why that was happening, the nurse gave different explanations each time, none of which had anything to do with the actual problem, hence it kept happening, causing my wife and I, as well as our neighbors, to have a couple of very sleepless nights. The next day we asked a different nurse and she told us about the tube being pinched. All too often it was very difficult to get a straight answer throughout our time there.
Another thing that was apparent there was the lack of synchronicity between the staff. Some told us that my wife should not eat until after delivery. Others said to eat a hearty meal. One administered more pitocin than the doctor ordered, causing the baby's bpm to spike during contractions. When the doctor returned she mentioned it was a critical error and to drop the pitocin. One nurse said that the dilation balloon was not ready to be removed yet, while the other nurse easily removed it after giving it a firm tug. After delivery, we were handed the sheet with the baby's footprints and they wrote the sex wrong... seriously? Also, after dark, you would think you could get some sleep since it's quiet hours right? WRONG! The cleaning staff doesn't respect this and makes a ton of noise, tossing things around with no regard for anyone.
Lastly, I did not feel I was treated as my wife's partner while I stayed there by some of the staff. For example, had they communicated to me what to do if the baby's bpm dropped under a certain level, I would have told my wife to change her position rather than have all the nurses alarmed and swarm over her causing unnecessary stress. The doctor barely ever made eye contact with me and the hospital, in general, is not set up to be very friendly to partners. If you want to use the bathroom, you have to walk all the way down the hall, through locked doors and possibly wait in line for the single-person bathroom. Otherwise you have to take the elevator all the way down to the lobby to have a more decent bathroom. The space of the rooms is a joke as well. We felt like we were in a cage for 4 days. It is also insanely cold in the hospital. We both caught colds during our stay there.
I realize this review sounds very negative, but at the end of the day, they helped us deliver a healthy baby so we are very grateful. Some of the staff was amazing and went out of their way to ensure we knew everything that was going on and what to expect. Everyone's experience will be different there and hopefully yours, if you choose to deliver there, will be positive and a bit more organized. From what I hear NYU Langone is one of the best in the area so it doesn't sound like there are many...
Read moreI have several reviews in one. The reason that I gave it a 2 is because the first experience was very pleasant, and very clean. I had to bring my mother here on June 12, 2023 until July 7,2023 but she was rushed to find an facility, and she was in 17 WEST. Although she did get 3 bed sores and several blisters, the nurses were mostly pleasant, and the rooms, floors etc were cleaned regularly (Several times a day)
Then because the facility was horrible (BRONX GARDENS REHABILITATION AND NURSING ,A CITIDEL COMPANY), so she is back. This time she was sent to 17 East and it is disgusting. I asked the nurse , is the maintenance was going to mop the floor or clean up, and I was told that they do not clean with patients in the room. That is disgusting. So I started cleaning myself with the Clorox and Alcohol wipes. Finally I started asking the maintenance to PLEASE clean the floor and he started doing it regularly. The doctor that she has this week is at best adequate but did not even want to check her, even though she stated that she believed that she had a stroke two days ago. The social workers Edouard/ and Marta are rude and disrespectful. I talked to Robert Valley from patient relations about construction being done 10 feet away from her room in this well over 100 year building, about asbestos concerns and his response was “Well I come here and I am not worried” the truth is, he should be because it is a long term concern . The makeshift Wall with the door that constantly opens is surely not protecting the patients from asbestos and every other entity that is in these ancient buildings. Patient relations is just here to patronize you and give you a false sense of security. There was a nasty patient care technician and two VERY NASTY NURSES. They brush it off.
UPDATE There is a social worker MARTA WHO IS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!!! She gave my mother discharge papers that included a sheet that said that she was in need of a Level 2 evaluation and wanted her to sign it. My mother waited for me to sign, and I CAN ATTEST TO THE FACT THAT SHE DID NOT HAVE A LEVEL 2 EVALUATION. I asked her what it was and she told me to cross it out. When she gave me the same paperwork yesterday that page was not given, Which means one of two things. Either she snatched it out, or today when the paperwork was printed it seen a need for a level 2 evaluation. She is the worse social worker in the hospital by far. So she then goes out the room talking about me to the nurses/ volunteers, and patient care techs. Grow up. She should be fired for her actions, but I am certain that this hospital does not care. I will NEVER BRING MY MOTHER...
Read moreThey told me I didn't "LOOK AUTISTIC".
My review is for their psychiatric inpatient which I have been to a couple of times as voluntary status at the recommendation of my former doctor (who used to work there).
In terms of cleanliness and food choices it's one of the better psych inpatients in the city. Patients tend to be quieter and well-behaved too. HOWEVER, this is a teaching hospital and it's apparent.
There's a lot of discrimination going on here based on gender/sexuality and insurance type. I noticed that they give anybody who's queer or assigned-female-at-birth a borderline diagnosis-- even if you don't meet the diagnostic criteria. Also, only white patients with private insurance would ever get referred for ECT.
They also never set me up with any sort of outpatient appointments upon discharge or made any changes to my medications. So I would end up having to come back just a few months later. I was even told that they would set me up with intensive outpatient therapy program after my last stay and they never did. I rarely if ever spoke to a social worker.
They give you a pamphlet of people you can speak to if you have questions or concerns about your treatment team during your stay. However, when I requested to speak to that someone they didn't allow me.
I felt uncomfortable with my treating psychiatrist and asked to be switched but every time I go there they give me the same doctor. This doctor kept incorrectly assuming that I self-harmed even though I have no history of it or marks anywhere on my body. I also have my doctors and therapists on the outside who confirmed this as well. But I had to correct her at least twice because somehow she kept assuming that I did?
When discussing my family medical history with the psychiatrist I mentioned that I thought I might possibly have autism. My family recognized some of my behaviors as being similar to people that had confirmed diagnosis. The psychiatrist's response to this was "you don't look Autistic".
.... A few months later I got a formal confirmed diagnosis by a neuropsychologist, a psychiatrist AND an autistic therapist. Apparently, my autism was obvious to everyone except me and I was likely misdiagnosed by previous psychiatrists that had no training to identify these signs in women. I was repeatedly told that the difficulties I was having was due to "depression" even though I had taken like every single antidepressant under the sun. 🥴
There is no such thing as an "autistic look". For the psychiatrist treating me at this inpatient facility to tell me that was totally inappropriate and...
