NYC is a tough place to practice medicine unless you can set up a cash-only niche practice that brings in $800 per hour. NYU Langone Health actually takes Medicaid, so you can imagine what sorts of things the administration has to do to its budget and staff to make up for the shortfall. The place looks pretty good to a patient like me who was on Medicaid at one point, but I used to know an NYU MD who told me a panoply of workplace horror stories. From getting enough RVUs to reach their contractual compensation to managing accurate diagnoses and good patient relationships in just 20 minutes, MDs at NYU are put through the ringer. Yup, unless youâre marked as a VIP in your chart and are therefore entitled to a 40 minute visit, you will be stuck with far less time than your coop board takes to evaluate your lease application. I did not donate significant money to an NYU building, so I got only 20 minutes.
After seeing about ten NYU physicians for different reasons or second opinions, Iâve come to some conclusions about the struggles of some of these physicians who have to put up with proletarian work nonsense at postgraduate training levels and why the level of care varies so much. Please note that these professionals should really unionize, but have been so indoctrinated as individual, economic actors that aligning with the UAW would be a severe blow to their egos. (Wouldnât it be fun though to see them blow up a giant rat at the First Ave hospital?)
There are some outstanding physicians in the NYU Langone system, but like all physicians there, they are subject to enormous time constraints. The truly good doctors can pick up in five to ten minutes if something is fishy, but there are plenty of doctors who are mediocre and miss a lot. Iâve experienced them. Twenty minutes is just not enough time, and the doctors will cut back even further to keep from falling behind schedule. If something unusual comes up, the time allotted is really only good for pulling from a medical school textbook and a bit of residency.
I donât know how NYU Langone hires or maybe itâs their system, but many of their physicians donât know how to practice critical thinking. As someone who has spent some time researching my issues across fields and wanting to take some time to discuss what I found with a doctor to see if there is any validity, the inability of many doctors to say, âI donât knowâ or to collaborate actively with colleagues is a problem. I suspect a lot of that has to do with the larger hospital system limiting the ability of individual physicians to do more than parrot their medical school textbooks. Perhaps NYUâs statistical results tell a different story, but I was faced with some complicated problems, and many of the physicians I went to didnât have enough sense to say, âThis is out of my fieldâ and work actively with me to explore a number of avenues, rather than provide a single, perhaps,...
Read moreDisappointed with the care provided by Julia Marvel, PA â Unprofessional and Possibly Discriminatory Treatment at NYU Langone Health
I am extremely disappointed with the level of care and professionalism I received from Julia Marvel, PA, during my recent visit to the emergency room at NYU Langone Health. I came in with legitimate health concerns and expected to receive compassionate care and appropriate medical attention. Instead, I was met with a dismissive and condescending attitude from Julia.
NYU Langone Health presents itself as a "woke" institution, but my experience has led me to question their true commitment to inclusivity and patient-centered care. It is disheartening to encounter such treatment at an institution that claims to value diversity and equal treatment for all.
I could not help but feel that her treatment towards me might have been influenced by my race and perceived that she displayed favoritism towards certain ethnic groups. This added to my distress and left me questioning the fairness of the care I received.
As a patient with a chronic illness, I was shocked by Julia's disregard for my well-being. She refused to perform the necessary tests I requested and initially denied me the chance to consult a doctor. Her actions not only added to my anxiety and stress but also put my health at risk.
Her unprofessional behavior, coupled with her dismissive comments and potential discriminatory actions, made me feel as though my concerns were not taken seriously. She may have violated Section 405.7 of 10 NYCRR, which grants patients the right to receive appropriate medical care without discrimination.
I believe that a healthcare provider should always prioritize their patient's well-being and provide care with empathy and understanding. Unfortunately, my experience with Julia Marvel was far from what I would expect from a seasoned medical professional, especially at an institution like NYU Langone Health.
I sincerely hope that my feedback is taken into consideration, and necessary steps are taken to ensure that no other patient has to go through such a disappointing and frustrating experience. Patients deserve better care and understanding when seeking medical attention, especially in an emergency setting, and should never have to question whether their race or ethnicity played a role in the care they received, or whether an institution truly values the principles it...
