During my stay in NY I looked for a barber and several websites recommended Tuft. Booked an appointment with Nico. Fantastic and friendly barber 10/10. Great vibe including his colleagues and the shop itself!

The reason I gave 4/5 is simply because of the staff who is at the cashier desk (specially the lady). They were not very friendly when I arrived and so the first impression was not the best. When Nico took me back to the cashier she did not bother to ask how was my thoughts about the service (bearing in mind it was my first visit) and loudly asked how I’d like to tip - which is something I really do not appreciate and it should be the customer proactively asking. I said by card and in a very abrupt way she said “no cards, only by cash” or another way/app which was unknown to me. I apologised and said I did not have any cash with me. She simply rolled her eyes and walked away. I could hear she moaning about it with her fellow cashier colleague which left me in a very uncomfortable position. I ignored and walked away.

Now you ask me? Would you go back? I definitely would for Nico however I question myself if the staff who gets my money deserve it. Probably not as they were rude and very unprofessional. An absolutely shame how an incredibly good experience ended up not being so great because of one or two...

One of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a barber shop.

I booked an appointment online for 11:00 AM. When I arrived, I was told I’d have to wait until 11:30—no prior notice, no apology, just poor organization. That didn’t work for me, so I rescheduled for 2:00 PM. I returned at 2:00, only to be told once again I’d have to wait—this time until 2:30—because they’d messed up the bookings again.

I waited until 2:40 PM, and the barber (black hair, first chair near the entrance) showed absolutely no urgency. Despite having already wasted my time twice, he was standing outside socializing and asking someone for a Google review, completely ignoring me.

Eventually, I’d had enough and asked for a refund (as I’d prepaid when booking). He casually said “no problem” with zero apology or accountability. As I walked away, he shouted “I’ll do it for free” in a sarcastic tone—felt more like mockery than a genuine offer.

Terrible energy. Unprofessional staff. Sloppy booking system. I won’t ever return. The only positive thing I can say is the receptionist was polite and helpful—everyone else,...

Hands down, easily, and BY FAR the WORST haircut and barbershop experience I have EVER had.

My barber completely ignored any requests I had about the haircut I wanted. I showed him pictures of past haircuts I liked, and a told him I wanted a scissor cut, and a little more than a trim. But he said “No, no, no. Trust me.” He was completely arrogant and ignored what I told him. Before getting cut, he even told me my current haircut was “horrible.” Before I could even finish describing what I wanted he had shaved all the length off the side of my head. He continued saying “Trust me.” When he was done, my hair was completely butchered. I can safely say that I will be wearing a hat for the next month+ until it grows back out.

Walking into Tuft, I had no idea that 30 minutes later I would be thoroughly embarrassed, ignored, and unhappy with my hair.

If you are looking for a haircut or even a trim, please avoid Tuft. There are plenty of barbershops and salons that are nicer, more accommodating, and more professional located in the immediate area.

You will completely regret...

I went to Tuft and had my hair cut by Nico. I am incredibly disappointed with the haircut I received. He did not adhere to the specifications I provided and it seemed as though he had never worked on kinky, thick hair before (although this is what the shop claims to specialize in). However, I chose to leave without saying anything to management because, at that point, the damage had been done and I know it will grow back in a few weeks. I did not leave a tip because I was dissatisfied with the service I received. I almost always tip, but when you charge more than 2 times ($80 for my cut at Tuft, and I have short hair) what a regular barber shop charges and give a horrible cut, don’t expect me to pay extra unless it is perfect. What surprised me most was that I received a text message from the shop later that night asking for a tip. To me, this is completely inappropriate especially when you charge 2x the going rate for a barber cut. Additionally, they tried to blame me for not approaching them after the bad cut. What were they going to do? Put the hair on the floor back on my head?

I paid $80 for a haircut with Luis and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. I was initially unsure about how much length to take off the top, so I asked for a conservative trim. After the first cut, I realized I wanted it a bit shorter and mentioned that eyebrow length is usually a good reference point for me. At that point, Luis seemed visibly annoyed and responded, “That’s a lot shorter.” Without clarifying how much more I wanted off, he began cutting in a rushed and uneven manner. The result was one of the most uneven haircuts I’ve had, especially noticeable when I brush the hair straight down. It’s frustrating because it seemed like it was on track to be a decent haircut before that. Luis, I’d encourage you to confirm specifics with your clients before making significant changes, and to be a bit more patient. I hadn’t had a haircut in a while and wasn’t entirely sure what I needed—definitely didn’t mean to be difficult. But in the end, the cut didn’t meet expectations. Unfortunately, I probably won’t be returning.

There is a little known secret to the legendary Mr Natty, the most hilarious royal barber. If you are REALLY lucky you may be able to get your head in shape again in Costa Rica as well as New York. Living in Costa Rica, as I do, cool haircuts are hard to come by and twice now I have lucked out on Mr Natty's annual sojourn to the jungle. You may notice the Cecropia trees, considered the jungle pioneers, in the photo background are unlikely accoutrements at Tuft. As a bonus to a unique and refreshingly different haircut you will get a boatload of London banter which you should probably pay more for as it will add a delightfully odd perspective to your world. The proof was in the pudding when a couple of months later I asked my formerly excellent hairdresser of many years to try and do the same thing. He said no he could not.
