This is a bit hard for me to write, I really like to use my review powers for good, but I think some things need to be said. First of all, I do appreciate that there are yarns here I havenât been able to find anywhere else, but the praise pretty much stops there. I will keep my feedback to the legitimate issues, not ones of personal preference. Since this is the only yarn shop in my area most fiber artists I know have been there. In talking to them what I have noticed is that older white women are treated the best. A friend of mine, 20 yo Latinx female, expressed that she felt racially profiled and therefore the staff was neither friendly nor helpful. I am a white 26yo female, running my own business selling knit goods. On my most recent trip to Monarch (which I freely admit I made grudgingly due to a project deadline) I was not greeted, in fact the two employees there at the time stood in one corner whispering to each other in a way that definitely felt like they were discussing the present customers, myself and a young man. I doubt they actually were discussing us, that is definitely some paranoia talking, but if you had seen a picture of the scene I believe you would indeed have the same suspicion. The employees were not rude when I completed my purchase, however up to that point they didnât even acknowledge I was there. I would also like to mention that I am an independent shopper and do not like to be over-engaged by the sales people, but no one should feel invisible. Like I said at the outset, I very rarely write negative reviews but in talking to some other local fiber artists I felt like this...
Read moreMonarch Knitting rescued me! We went on vacation and I left my knitting at home...YIKES!!! When I went into the store, the friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff directed me exactly to what I wanted. What impressed me the most is out of all is out of the knitting stores I have been in this is probably one of best organized stores I have ever been in. It is laid out by yarn weight, which means if you have a pattern and it calls for a certain type of yarn, they can take you to that section. None of the other yarn stores I have even been in have even been set up this way, and believe me, i have even worked in them that weren't set up that way...just by manufacturer and you had you muck you way though the yarn. If you are on the Monterey Peninsula and are a knitter, need yarn or are interested in becoming in a knitter...this is your go to place. HIGHLY recommended. I loved this place and felt at...
Read moreI met the owner Amy at Stitches West this year and have been getting their newsletter. When they advertised for a workshop by a designer that I really loved I decided to drive the two hours to Pacific Grove and make a weekend of it. And boy am I glad I did. If I were to picture my ultimate knitting shop, the one in an idyllic small sleepy New England town Monarch Knitting would be that shop. First of all the place is gorgeous. Secondly The whole store is open, light and full of sunshine. The selection of yarns is awesome since there is such a large area to house them. The staff is warm and welcoming and of course my fellow knitters were their regular friendly selves. The workshop turned out to be worth the drive but even if there wasnât a workshop the store itself is well...
