I went into this store a few days ago to shop. I have been loving the pieces online and wanted to try in store. When I entered the store, I was not greeted, I watched as two other clients came into the store and they were immediately greeted. I walked around the store, touching pieces and looking at the sales associate who would never make eye contact with me. I helped myself to the fitting room and settled on a top. When I came out of the fitting room the sales associate who had ignored me the entire time told her coworker that she was taking her break, and the other sales associate proceeded to help the two other clients. I placed the top at the registered and waited for assistance. After seeing that I was not a priority and would not receive any assistance, I walked out. Read moreI was really disappointed with my experience at Free People, especially considering its location—right in front of a Mexican museum. The irony was not lost on me. So much of the clothing is clearly inspired by Mexican culture, yet it felt like the store catered exclusively to a certain type of customer—and that did not include people of color.
My friend and I walked in and received zero acknowledgment, no greeting, nothing. Meanwhile, a group that came in right after us was greeted immediately and warmly. The difference in treatment was noticeable and uncomfortable. If you’re going to profit off cultural aesthetics, the least you can do is welcome everyone who walks through the door.

It’s a small store and I think everyone could hear them. I now know that one of the ladies they talked about had returned a sweater with holes in it and the other lady is a hard customer who needs a lot of help.
