I had a deeply disappointing and discriminatory experience at the Dick’s Sporting Goods in Plymouth Meeting. As I was arriving, I saw a Black man being arrested for shoplifting at the entrance. While I had no connection to the situation, it became clear very quickly that both the manager and the police associated me with him simply because of our shared race.
While I was in the store, the manager told me I needed to “go to church and pray.” As a Muslim woman who was fully covered, this comment was beyond offensive and completely inappropriate. I asked her to repeat herself, and she said it again. When I rightfully challenged her, the situation escalated, and instead of addressing her discriminatory behavior, I was detained by police for “trespassing.”
I’m well aware of Dick’s policy that allows them to ask people to leave their property if they’re disruptive. But in this case, that policy was clearly used to target me unfairly, not because of my actions, but because of my appearance and religion.
If you’re a person of color or practice a non-Christian faith, I strongly urge you to be cautious at this location. It’s clear that judgments are being made based on race and religion, not behavior.
I’m incredibly disappointed in both Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Plymouth Meeting Police Department for how this was handled. We deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, not profiled...
Read moreI’m not normally a “review a place” kind of guy. However… I have to give props and appreciation for our experience yesterday. My wife and our 2 kids (10 and 13) came in looking for a bike for our 13 year old daughter. We found some nice deals on a bike for our daughter , then happened to eye a GREAT deal on an $800 bike on sale with $500 off! One beautiful bike that fit my 10 year old son perfectly.. (who we planned to give him his big sister’s hand-me-down bike to.) … Rich gave us good info on all the bikes and actually seemed excited and was super helpful to help us find the same bike and style that my daughter was in to. He was good with both of the kids (both of whom are deaf). Not akward or ‘wierd’ as many people are with deaf children. We ended up buying one that was ready to bring home for my son, and another that fit my daughter better that was still in the box, that Rich promised would get assembled and be ready to pick up soon. This rep went above and beyond. On a day when he could reasonably be a little bit ‘salty’ that he was working on the 4th of July. But he made it seem like an excited grandfather trying to fit his own Grandkids in to a good fit for them. And he mirrored their enthusiasm while still helping them temper it with the ‘right fit’ with room to grow.
I wish more stores had more Rich’s working there. He is a blessing to this location and the...
Read moreYesterday was my worst experience I’ve ever had in this facility. NO ONE would help me, even after I asked multiple employees. The one girl was handing out pretzels for a cause with 2 other people, BOTH of them told her she could help me find a shirt ,since she was an employee, and I was looking for in my size but she said she would not because she was handing out pretzels? There were 3 people manning that booth and no one was even there. It doesn’t take 3 people to hand out some life savers and pretzels. Then, she called for someone to help. 7-8 mins later no one arrived and she was literally watching me get more and more frustrated. I walked to the next department asked a man to help me after telling him the situation. He said all he would do is radio someone to help me. After waiting a few more minutes, I decided to leave. As I was leaving I saw THREE store members standing around talking to each other including the man I had just asked for help. They all watched me frustrated put my things back since no one would help me and didn’t say a word as I walked out, which was even more humiliating. When I was their age, which was only like 10 years ago, helping the customer was already a priority. Absolutely disgusted. Thanks for turning what should have been a fun trip to get things for a sporting event into a really frustrating...
