I am writing about a negative experience I had at the Tim's. I got kicked out of a paid tournament on 6/14/2025 because the other players did not like my deck. Sounds extreme but it happened to me at Tim's. Here is the background information and what happened.
Background: Tournaments at Tim's restrict deck building to the following, Tier 3 or lower (based on MTG tiering system as of 6/14/2025), up to 3 game changer cards, no two card infinite combos and combos cannot be activated before turn 7 (only after turn 6). Given these regulations I built my deck accordingly. Even going so far as to talk to Tim about the deck multiple times over the past several of months. When I talked to Tim on 6/13/2025 he expressed interest in seeing how the deck faired after I told him that Sol Ring would make the deck nonfunctional .
What happened: I entered the tournament on 6/14/2025 and got put in my first pod. The interactions with the other players were pleasant until my deck went off. After I won the pod Tim asked me to step outside to talk. He told me that three people talked to him about the game and that I was being removed from the tournament because of my deck. He then offered to either give me the tournament consolation prize or my entry fee back. Even though the deck was tournament legal and that I felt that I was unfairly treated I still wanted to continue to play. I then offered to play a different deck for the remainder of the tournament (note: the new deck was played in a tournament at Tim's on 6/13/2025 with no issue). He said no and that his business would be better served to have me leave rather than risk other people walk out. He once again gave me the choice of either getting my entry fee or the tournament consolation prize but this time adding that if I do not choose one of the options then I will be permanently banned form the store. I took my entry fee and left. And that is it.
I know what some of you are thinking. This can not be the reason I was kicked out of the tournament. I must have been an jerk to the other players in my pod. Tim's has cameras in the store recording the going ons. While I do not know if the player area is recoded, but if it is, I urge and give permission to Tim to release my unedited interactions with the pod for that game.
What is next for Tim's and me: I will not be going back there. I called the store on 6/18/2025 to find a resolution and to help him restructure the rules so this would not happen again. Tim told me over the phone while he recognized I was trying to find a "happy medium" there was nothing more to talk about. This means there is a possibility that any deck I bring, while tournament legal and with Tim's approval, will get me kicked out because the other players do not like it. That type of play group where the winner of a tournament is determine by mob rule rather than skill is a play group I personally do not wish to participate in. I wish Tim and store the best of luck and I hope this does not happen to...
