We rented a 12 Passenger van 5 months in advance and even called a few days early to check that everything was ok including the kid carseat we requested. We were told it was all going to be ready. I arrive to pickup our van when one associate to tell me he called me a few days ago (didn't happen) and that they have it all worked out for me. "Instead of renting you one van, we have two brand new 7 passenger SUVs for you, bluetooth, wifi etc". Like he's doing me a favor... We have three families meeting in SLC and then we are headed to Yellowstone, so now he asking us to pay double the fuel and we can't hang out on the road trip. With family arriving at the airport within 30 minutes, my hands were tied. But I let them know my displeasure with the situation and they gave me a large price break. I jump in one of the SUV's and make my way to the airport. I call my wife and she calls the Hertz national number and starts to find out what else they can do. After I had picked up our family, my wife calls and says they have a van at the airport location with our name on it. Hertz downtown says they can have the van at their location within 30 minutes and they are headed to get it right away. They would call when it was there. 45 minutes pass and no call. We initiate the call and now they are saying it'll be another hour. We already have a 5hr drive ahead of us, it's approaching noon and had made plans to celebrate my son's birthday at our destination. I ask if I can just go to the airport myself, to which they gladly accepted. Two of us leave our families at the hotel and make our way back to the airport only to wait another 40 minutes for them to produce this van from a back lot somewhere. It is a 15 passenger with NO CARGO room for our three families and two weeks of luggage. But we decide we can stack everything in the seats and we leave the SUV behind. The van only has a 1/4 tank of fuel...awesome! They make note of it in the contract and away we go. We still have to return to the downtown location to pickup the carseat they were going to clean for me. Shouldn't that have been done before I arrived?? Nearly 3hrs behind schedule we are finally making our way out of SLC! The only silver lining is that we ended up with a van that we could "make work" for a great price. How does a place like this stay...
Read moreI am a Five Star Hertz member. The wait to get the vehicle was over an hour, and when it was finally our turn there were only two vehicles available. We chose the Tesla, but it was at 6% charge and we were told we needed to find a charger ourselves. We spoke with the person cleaning the vehicle and they showed us a charger that Hertz uses. We went to lunch while it charged, but when we came back the staff said they were unaware they even had a Tesla charger and apologized for not charging it (we ended up being billed for that charge). On inspection, the Tesla’s trunk didn’t close properly and both storage compartments were broken. I took videos and asked for a different car, but there were no other options, so I documented the issues and left. Four days later, I returned because the Tesla’s battery was faulty. On a full charge it only had a 120-mile range and was losing 5% overnight even with every feature disabled. I spoke with Tesla directly and they confirmed something was wrong. When I went back to the Hertz office, they admitted the battery was bad but said it was just “bad luck” and there was nothing they could do since they had no other cars. I called the Hertz Five Star line twice and was hung up on both times. I also discovered at this point that my partner—although they scanned her driver’s license at pickup—was never added to the rental system as promised. When I asked to have her added, they said there was a “glitch” and nothing they could do, but assured me she would still be covered. I pushed back, and they eventually signed a business card with the policy number stating she was covered. Meanwhile, we were still stuck with the bad Tesla. None of the nearby Hertz locations had vehicles, except for the airport. However, the local office said there was no direct number for the airport location and that electric vehicles couldn’t be returned there. The next day a truck came in, so I switched to that and drove it to the airport, where they finally set me up with a very nice hybrid at no extra fee. The airport staff apologized for the whole situation. In the end, I got the non-airport rate, but only after a huge hassle. Save yourself the trouble: just rent directly at the airport. If the fee is too much, rent somewhere else. They’re the only place in Salt Lake City with surplus cars that actually recognize...
Read moreAs most of the negative reviews confirmed. We paid and reserved a 7 seater SUV as we had 6 people with luggage. We were wary of this office due to the negative reviews so we called ahead to make sure our booking was confirmed and available. After some difficulties in trying to get through to a human to talk to it was confirmed. When we arrived to pick up our vehicle we were informed that they did not have our vehicle. The person in front of us also did not get his vehicle but lucked out and seemed to take our reservation for a 7 seater (which he did not need). We were stuck. As an alternative we were offered a cargo van, which we decided to take out of desperation to move our gear at least to the house due to it being a snowstorm. They informed us that they were short some 30 cars that they were not able to fulfill reservations for!?! We tried to call back the next day to get at least another vehicle or two but we’re met with further failures to deliver or even alternative suggestions. Next we just turned up at another branch and luckily they had a smaller 5 seater SUV which we swapped the cargo van. It still was not adequate and we needed to shuttle our crew or call ride share to move to different places we wanted to visit. This whole experience with Hertz has pretty much spoilt our holiday to Salt Lake City. How does a business screw up this much? This Hertz office did not even provide the basic courtesy of a phone call or even an email/txt to inform the customer of problems with their reservation system and to just continue to take bookings?? We were never called back or even acknowledged for our grievances and were charged extra for swapping vehicles. We paid for a vehicle we didn’t get and also charged extra for trying to get anything of lesser value as an alternative. This Hertz office is just sad and pathetic. Hertz corporate should shut it down or perform extreme restructuring and training to bring it to a level of basic expectation for a rental business. I hope this review provides fair warning and expectations to how you might be treated by booking through this office and possibly the Hertz system. 1 star is not even what...
