I took a tour of Loma Square today and I can understand why this particular section of Midway Drive - from the huge concrete building that still takes up about 1/3 of Midway Dr. - at the very south end of this street, to the entrance of the "New San Diego Main Post Office," at 2701 Midway Drive ( travelling north or south). It isn't really "new," as the changes came into fruition over a couple of decades ago, when Margaret Sellers was getting ready to leave her position as "Postmaster General." She was one of San Diego's very best - the heart of our poastal service. In fact,I remember writing to her several times about various customer relations subjects and her replies were very well presented. This large area is still the San Diego Post Office's primary mail delivery and shipment site ; you can often see huge single trailer trucks and "semi's" delivering mail and transporting mail from this branch to the airport, as well as other mail from myriad other "branch offices"to this primary branch office. The mail from all over San Diego County, the United States and from foreign countries is processed at this office. It's still transported to you by your "postal carrier"( mailman) or by automobile train and/or postal express plane. The next area consists of the large shopping center, which is known as "Loma Sguare!" Loma Square has a really good buffet dining establishment that I believe is underrated, which is called the Yummy Buffet. It's definitely worth your money to stop and eat here because, when you think about what a family pays for a "fast food" meal at McDonald's, Jack's, or any other similar place, the bill often easily exceeds $20..At the Yummy Buffet you get many more good choices and the total prices may amount to the same price or else a little more but you get a lot more for your money. The Loma Square has a CVS ( You can find a CVS within at least three locations along Midway Drive (north) and most Target Stores also have a CVS Pharmacy within everyone of their stores. They also have a large Carl's Jr., T.J.Maxx department store, a Party City (The latter is a very large and popular chain store, that specializes in selling everything one could need to set up a Party and they also cater...) ; also a Home Goods Store and ULTRA. They have a Sprouts, a grocery market that specializes in "organic foods" ( I like them better than Trader Joe's, as their stock isn't so friggin` expensive. In fact, now that Amazon has taken over Whole Foods, their overpriced "organics" have taken a nice price drop too!). Next to the Yummy Buffet, there is a Auto S. rubber Car Wash and a full service Chevron Station. Loma Square has about four smaller restaurants that looked good however, I had already eaten at Rubio's Coastal Grill ; it's right across the street. There are a few other noteworthy stores right across the street - on the east side of Midway Dr. These include AARON Brother's Art & Framing, Smart and Final, Michael's Art/Hobby Supply Store, O,Reilly Auto Parts, PHO' s Asian Buffet and several other stores. You should be able to find just about anything that you want within this area.Don't forget Rosecrans Center, as it's also just a...
Read moreWhile being near I-5 & I-8, Loma Square is stuck right at the intersection of Midway & Rosecrans- traditionally the worst intersection in San Diego for traffic congestion.
In spite of that, there are some really neat stores here including Starbucks, Jamba Juice & Einstein Bro Bagels-- right next each other.
For those needing longer term nourishment a Sprouts Market helps. On the other side (N) the Native foods Cafe & Guzman Grill will fill your tummy.
But now do you have any money left? Go to a new addition to the Square: Dollar Tree. A new concept store I have not seen before, but really welcome to those on limited budget.
All the usual items a large supermarket will have... BUT EVERY item broken into $1 packages! See those fancy cookies you like but can't afford the 4-5$ box? Just buy the $1 package (of much fewer cookies, but hey! At least you get a taste) within your means.
Oddly enough on some cleaning supplies I see the cost per ounce is Less than the full packages elsewhere...
Of course, if this feels too down market for you and yet Sprouts Farmers Market is just too expensive... just exit onto Midway Dr. NW and get what you need at Grocery Outlet! (In Midway...
